Personally I use Maple peas :)

DO YOU NOT THINK THIS WILL MAKE THEM A BIT HEAVY IF THEY HAVE THESE ALL THE TIME

Alf Baker was a great believer in Maple Peas, see 'Winning Naturally'  Myself, I prefer Tic Beans and as long as the YB's exercise well there will be no problem with weight gain.

SAME HERE I FEED MY YOUNG BIRDS NOTHING BUT BEANS AS SOON AS THEY ARE WEANED TILL RACING IS FINISHED, WITH THE EXCEPTION IF I SEND THEM TO OUR LONGEST YOUNG BIRD RACE THEN THEY GET A LITTLE MAIZE OR NUTS DURING THAT WEEK

Paulo,

I am nowhere near as experienced as others that are commenting but I have lost enough youngsters off the top of the loft due to inexperience to feel the need to reply to yor post. One of the reasons was through feeding too much protein and excersing the birds at the wrong time of day.

I still like to feed them Maples and tic beans as I think these are great for a youngsters growth but I wouldnt dream of letting them out before midday.

One thing I will say is that if you want to win a race up to 250miles you wont win with a high protein diet but if you want the youngsters back, this is best diet to feed.

I find, whether it be young or old birds, that pigeons prefer smaller grains for  their first feed, and that Diat 2000 suits their needs. The second  (evening) feed, I use breed  and wean which also contains smaller grains mixed with good quality maple peas. During racing I also add some sunflower hearts and hempseed depending on how the birds are exercising. For ultimate control, peanuts are used sparingly, until the longer races loom, when the peanuts are increased. Perhaps not everybodys cup of tea, but it certainly suits mine. Vic. ;)

if you want to win yb races feed them a lighter diet [high carboheydrate]  but these ybs in my opinion would not go on to make good distance birds , plenty protein beans and peas , a little maize, plenty exercise from day one, ,their still able to win yb races but more liable to make better obs
