Guest CS Posted February 7, 2007 Report Posted February 7, 2007 if you had a cock that had flown really well to a particular hen would you change the hen to pair him to a better bred hen to breed some young off him or would you keep him to the same hen he raced to ???? or dont you think it would affect him ???
pigeonscout Posted February 7, 2007 Report Posted February 7, 2007 Breed him to the new hen for first round then back to the hen he races well to for 2nd round.
Tony C Posted February 7, 2007 Report Posted February 7, 2007 I'd keep him with the same hen, he's in that loft to race.
Guest shadow Posted February 7, 2007 Report Posted February 7, 2007 I'd keep him with the same hen, he's in that loft to race. wholeheartedly agrre
Beanz Posted February 7, 2007 Report Posted February 7, 2007 Agree with Tony and Shadow leave him be.
Guest Posted February 7, 2007 Report Posted February 7, 2007 I don't think it is a straightforward yes or no. Was faced with just same situation 2005 / 2006, asked for advice on this forum, and decided to change the hen for a stock hen in 2006 because I wanted to breed better youngsters from this cock. I changed the hen, I got my youngsters but I lost the cock racing. Regrets? Yes ... and no. This year its slightly different. Its a racing hen I'm interested in breeding better youngsters from and its her cock I'm changing for a stock cock. Its a very important breeding stage for me because its my very first 'Father to best Daughter pairing' and she's 4 years old. My dilemna is not changing her cock but : do I continue to race her? She was very badly injured late last year in a hawk attack on her last training spin before going to her 1st channel race. She's obviously in her prime.
Beanz Posted February 8, 2007 Report Posted February 8, 2007 Bruno, If she has bred you good pigeons before I would leave her alone, if you send her and she has not fully recovered you may regret it. Paul
Guest anthony Posted February 8, 2007 Report Posted February 8, 2007 I have a hen (Theresa) already won 4x1st 3x2nd,done the road 13x.Got only one youngster from her,she is in good shape for another race, temptation is to send her once again.I think I am going to stop her and breed a few off her.Any advise?
PIGEON_MAN Posted February 8, 2007 Report Posted February 8, 2007 If a bird as proved itself to be a very good racer I would leave it racing, perhaps taking it,s age into consideration as well but there is no guarentee that because it as raced well it is going to breed well, likewise i would not swap the pairs if one had been racing well to the other.
Guest Posted February 8, 2007 Report Posted February 8, 2007 ;D i have put a stock hen to my best racing cock this year ! Mosslands 1 (another member on pb) visited end of last year and picked out the cock as best in racing loft with no prior knowledge of the birds , then picked out the hen . he has a lot more experience than me ( an old bugger ) ;D ;D so i acted on his advice , looking forward to better quality ybs this year , just hope i can hold on to them pete ? andy 8)
Guest Posted February 8, 2007 Report Posted February 8, 2007 Bruno, If she has bred you good pigeons before I would leave her alone, if you send her and she has not fully recovered you may regret it. Paul Yes, my thoughts exactly. Late July, my hen had a hole in her back which took an awful lot of antiseptic to fill up, more than a flesh wound I think. But she's now up there exercising with the rest. I take inspiration tho from John Bird, Prestonpans (Edinburgh) Bits'n'Pieces, a 3 yo cock which won 6th Open SNFC Alencon 2006, 500+ miles vel 1023, after having returned from the previous year's Gold Cup race next morning so badly hawked, John didn't expect the bird to live out the night.
Guest Posted February 8, 2007 Report Posted February 8, 2007 ;D to add to my earlier post , if cocks still here at seasons end will be going into my stock loft (04 rung) , just (1/2 hour ago) put his original hen back in the one hes raced to all along ,will raise 1 off them , his first round eggs floated 4 days ago under another pair ! andy 8)
Guest slugmonkey Posted February 8, 2007 Report Posted February 8, 2007 If this hen has bred good babys that win races put her to stock you dont often get ones that fly and breed so take note P.S. its the nest and babys she's flying to not the cock
