I’m not sure if I should be using this forum, apologies if I should not. I am enquiring on behalf of the Appledore (Kent) Local History Society about racing pigeons that were sent to Appledore for release. We know that in the early sixties special trains ran from the Newcastle area (West Durham Amalgamation) to Appledore Station were the baskets were lined up in the goods yard ready for release of the pigeons. In later years the pigeons were transported in pantechnicon vans to the Playing Fields in Appledore where the baskets were lined up along the edge of the football pitch ready for release. Later on special lorries were used whereby only some baskets had to be unloaded the rest being released from the lorry.

The last time we know of  racing pigeons coming to Appledore was 1990 and was the Lanarkshire Racing Pigeon Federation.

We would appreciate any information concerning these events such as clubs, federations involved. Dates of these events, names of those who traveled with the pigeons to Appledore, any personal memories of those involved, any pictures or correspondence concerning these events, etc. We are happy to reimburse any expenditure for postage, photocopying etc.

If you are able to help please contact Brian Knight, Heathland House, The Heath, Appledore, Kent, TN26 2BB  or e-mail ThrKng@aol.com

Thanks
