Guest Posted February 1, 2007 Report Posted February 1, 2007 i cant see y distance is so like the holy grail to some flyers, and sprint-middle distance looked down on. i think there are quite a few flyers who look down on shorter races as not worth winning and entering, while i myself believe a race is a race,no matter wot distance it is. winning a short race can be as exciting as winning a long one. which do u prefer and wot r ur opinions on this?....paul
Guest TAMMY_1 Posted February 1, 2007 Report Posted February 1, 2007 SAME AS YOURS WINNING ANY RACE IS GOOD , I RACE IN ALL RACES FROM 60 MILES TO 500 MILES AND LOVE WINNING ANY OF THEM
swilcox Posted February 1, 2007 Report Posted February 1, 2007 I will tell you why mate. If the wind is right or the batch paces over your loft or postion or over fly comes into play even the average fancier can have his day but when the distance increases to 300, 400, and 500+ miles only the very best pigeons win and the most skillfull of fanciers excel. Time on the day from 500+ miles and you will start to understand. I have had many pigeons win under 100 miles but not all of them have been good pigeons yet everyone of my channel pigeons were total quality. No matter what way you look at it the longer the distance the harder the racing!!!! Just my thoughts Stuart

maverick Posted February 1, 2007 Report Posted February 1, 2007 everyone to there own , short , middle or distance, just remember to shake the hand of the winner no matter what the distance .
Guest Vic Posted February 1, 2007 Report Posted February 1, 2007 Yes Stuart, the five hundred mile races are indeed something different. I have some great memories of them over the the years. I remember one year taking 1,2,3,4 club, high up in Amal and Combine, all timed within seven and a half minutes, after flying 13 and a half hours on the wing. The condition of them on their return, has always stayed in my mind, quite unbelivable. Vic.
jimmy white Posted February 4, 2007 Report Posted February 4, 2007 I LIKED ALL RACING ,BUT I THINK THE REASON THE 5,,600MILE RACE, PRIZEWINNERS ARE SOMETIMES THOUGHT MORE OF IS BECAUSE IT TAKES MORE TIME TO HAVE MATURE PIGEONS , AND THERES CERTAINLY MORE DOWNS THAN UPS,,SO ITS A LONGER MORE PATIENT GAME, BUT IT TAKES A LOT OF PIGEON AND A LOT OF SKILL TO GET THE BEST OUT THEM AT THIS DISTANCE, BUT EVERYONE TO THEIR OWN ,SPRINT RACES CAN BE VERY ENJOYABLEAND,ALSO AN ART IN THEM,HAVE THEIR GOOD POINTS I.E. DONE AND DUSTED BY THE AFTER NOON, BUT IT AINT NO FUN SITTING TWO DAYS [sOMETIMES]AND NOT GETTING A BIRD,,,,,,BUT IF YOU GET ONE,,WOW ;D ;D ;D
Ronnie Posted February 4, 2007 Report Posted February 4, 2007 now i'm new to the sport and never flew anything over 280mile but i would think in the sprint race its more to do with the skill of the fancier whilst longer distance the pigeon itself takes on a bigger role.Ive often heard people say anything can win a sprint but it takes something special to do 500 mile on the day.

Guest Greenways Posted February 4, 2007 Report Posted February 4, 2007 I heard a story many years ago, It was late at night and a batch of pigons landed in this town. Some pitched on houses in the valley and some pitched on top of a hill. In the morning it was thick fog the birds on the hill got away but the birds in the valley had to wait a couple of hours till it was OK. I do not class any race which goes over 1 day a race But good luck to the people that enter them and I hope they enjoy it.

If anyone can win a sprint why are they not all doing it? A lot of fanciers that cannot win short races call themselves distance men. The fact is they win at no distance and don't even send their birds to the 500 or 600 mile races. I always ask these men if your birds are distance birds and they are only good for the distance races why are you having your clock set for a 80 mile race. True distance men lost a lot of birds and I take my hat off to them because it is a very hard kind of racing and you need bxlls the size of coconuts to send your race team to a 500 mile race. They take a big gamble to win the big race. If a fancier sends 30 birds to a 250 chances are he will get all 30 back on the day. If a distance man sent 30 to a 600 he would be jumping for joy if he got 15 back in two days. The difference between the two is in they way the birds are set up for the race feeding, system, etc. I could not say who is the best fancier because they are in my view two different games same as pool and snooker. So what are the best birds? the very fast bird or a slower but longer flying bird? My answer to that is find the ones for the game you are playing.
