paul l Posted March 8, 2007 Author Report Posted March 8, 2007 cool so no certan way of putting it on just straight on cool
Guest speckled Posted March 9, 2007 Report Posted March 9, 2007 well the y/b should be rung between 5 to 7 day. Well i like to ring on the left leg with the ring to be the right way up :-/ meaning the numbers on the ring to be facing me, so when a pigeon stands up the numbers are upside down.alot say it easy to read on basketing night at the ringer then the rubber will alway go on the right leg. just the way ive always done it :) mate ow washing up liquid is another good source to squeeze the ring on aswell :P as it always on hand lol (gangster vasoline lol lol) Speck ;D ;D ;D ;D
tubbles Posted March 9, 2007 Report Posted March 9, 2007 I use washing up liquid too. if you leave it a bit late you can use a feather quill to get the back toe through the ring and i ring the same way as speckled, upside down as you look at it walking, on the left leg. If you have not rung one before you would be best trying it on one that is too young then take it off over the whole foot and that way you should know what to expect. As for gangster and his vaseline and rings.......... well I better leave that alone. LOL
Guest Posted March 9, 2007 Report Posted March 9, 2007 Agree with Speck, but I tend to turn the youngster upside down to put the ring on; when the bird is upside down, the ring is right side up, you can read it. Make sure your hands are warm, and place the youngster upside down in the palm of your hand. If I read you correctly Paul, you've not rung youngsters before, and yes there is a knack to it. Timing is important, as are the length of the toes, the length of the back toe claw and the thickness of the 'ankle' joint. Start checking these from 5 days old and it is always better to ring a day early than a day late. Only problem with early ringing is the youngster may slip the ring in the nest, so always check newly rung youngsters for next few days to make sure that doesn't happen. On ringing Start by putting the three front toes together, then gently pushing the ring / pulling the three front toes thro the ring till the claws of front toes are well clear of the ring, stop when the ring reaches the birds 'ankle' joint. Before pushing the ring over the 'ankle' joint, push the back toe back along the leg, lubricate the ankle joint (spit on it) and push the ring gently over the joint and along the back toe & leg as far along the leg as is comfortable for the bird, the next joint up the leg will usually stop the ring going any further. The last bit is for me the tricky bit and its made worse by the curved claw on the back toe which can hook upwards over the edge of the ring and stop you getting the back toe back thro; start my making sure its not hooked over the ring, and push it down under the rim; the back toe has to be pulled back thro the ring, and you do this by pulling it from the 'ankle' joint end, at the same time keeping the ring pushed against the other joint to give you room to get hold of the back toe and enough clearance to pull the toe back thro the ring. After the toe is thro, the ring is on, turn the bird right way up, sit it in the palm of your hand and give it a few moments TLC just to show it has nothing to fear from you, before returning it to the nest.

Guest Vic Posted March 9, 2007 Report Posted March 9, 2007 I agree with 99% of the above comments, but it is generally accepted that the ring should go on the right leg to make the marking of birds easier for the majority of R/H fanciers. Vic.
Guest Posted March 9, 2007 Report Posted March 9, 2007 Make sure you have warm hands or they wont be tame later in life I'm surprised Specks didn't pick me up on that ommission, and that the youngster is upside down in the palm of me hand. ;D Funny how with Specks, upside down and palm of my hand do spring to mind.
