Guest Posted March 12, 2007 Report Posted March 12, 2007 Ian, Firstly I apologise for the delay in responding to your query regarding the shooting of racing pigeons, I have been out of the office for the past few days. There is no animal welfare legislation directly covering the shooting of racing pigeons but I will cover a number of issues surrounding the matter. 1. If the pigeons are not being shot cleanly then there may be offences under the Animal Health and Welfare (Scotland) Act 2006, section 19. The possible offence here would be for causing unnecessary suffering. Suffering would need to be proven, post mortem findings would be needed to show that the birds did not die instantly and that suffering would have occurred. 2. If the person shooting the pigeons is not the owner of the pigeons then theft becomes and issue. 3. Remaining offences would relate to fire arms offences, these would depend upon the type on weapon used, licensing issues and where the weapon was discharged as to whether there was a danger to the public. You would need to contact the police regarding possible offences here. I trust that this has been of help to you, S.I. Penny Johnston. velo99 Posted March 12, 2007 Report Posted March 12, 2007 Had a kid across the alley with a pellet gun popped a couple of rounds off at my birds in the loft. I went over and jumped on him with both feet. Told him if ANY of my birds ever got shot I was coming to him first and I was gonna plant a size 13 boot right in his......well you know . If any of his little buddies have pellets guns and want do some shooting I was coming to him first. So be warned. Not a peep since and that was a year ago.
