Guest Freebird Posted July 17, 2009 Report Posted July 17, 2009 It is a recessive opal blue cheq. Thanks Graeme, How you doing mate. Not a mosaic by the way. (happy)
Glassfeather Posted July 17, 2009 Report Posted July 17, 2009 I'm good thanks Chazz. Yeah, its a funny thing, some people call them mosaics, some people call them opals. I don't suppose it matters, but if you want to breed more of them, then I reckon it is handy to know the mode of inheritance.
Guest waynemorris Posted July 18, 2009 Report Posted July 18, 2009 just wondering if anyone on here will be showing at the Builth Wells show next week.. I think they usually have it on a Monday. Im going for a few drinks and a look around, hopefully the birds will be there this year
Guest Posted July 18, 2009 Report Posted July 18, 2009 Can see more and more people going over to Show Racers before to much longer, if something isn't done soon about the BOP problem. Not wishing to turn this thread into another BOP issue, but realistically, for people like myself who have pigeons in the blood and kept them for over 60 years, it seems a favourable alternative, and I am sure there is as much enjoyment with show racers, if not more, when you eliminate the anxiety of letting them out to become percy cuted. Seriously thinking of getting some myself, and cutting down my stress levels ;)
pjc Posted July 18, 2009 Report Posted July 18, 2009 I totaly agree Bob, showing is a great side to the sport. As for mosaics, i know its not in the true sence because it only has 2 colours on each cover feather and should have the black edgeing. There are very very few cockbirds with the laceing, i think in 31 years of having had them i've only ever bred 1 true cockbird but every hen i keep is a true mosaic.

Whooosh .......... that went straight past me, reckon I got a lot to learn regarding colour if I am going to get interested in SR ;D ;D
pjc Posted July 18, 2009 Report Posted July 18, 2009 Bob has asked a few questions about Show Racers and I thought it would be of interest to post the answers on the thread as there are no secrets amongst the answers. ;) Firstly do you personally encounter the same problems with YB Sickness and similar infections with your SR that people seem to get with normal racing pigeons. All birds can encounter problems but are treated the same way as the racers, I personally have never had YBS in them but I know others that have. We did via a friend get 12 fancy birds direct from germany, Our friend had tried breeding from them and was having problems, when we had them we treated them and have never had a problem since but they were/are kept seperatly. What is/are the best weekly/monthly magazines that cover show racers. There isn't a spacific magazine, the BHW has a bit about showing but the feathered world seems the choice of the fancy guys. And do you know the nearest SR club in this area. There are some Show Racer members in your area, the Rice's, Collin Bullard etc but i'm not sure which society they belong to. Do you know if there are many shows over this way (Norfolk) I don't think there are any large shows in your area now sisnce the East of England stopped but there are probably Fancy society shows that will have show racer classes. Do you keep your birds on a deep litter system, or the scraper on a daily basis. Through the winter i'll put them on deep litter shavings and scrape the perches daily, but it is easier to keep the birds clean than have to clean them for a show. What feed do you give your show racers. Mine are fed on YB no maize all year as they don't put fat on with it. What are the best books/videos that explain how to keep/feed/prepare SR for showing. The only book specificaly on Show Racers i think is Doug McClary's but i've never read it. It will give you the basics in there i would asume. Phil
pjc Posted July 18, 2009 Report Posted July 18, 2009 Whooosh .......... that went straight past me, reckon I got a lot to learn regarding colour if I am going to get interested in SR ;D ;D I will try and find a pic showing hens colour/markings.
Guest Posted July 18, 2009 Report Posted July 18, 2009 Phil, I just found this site, do the colour guidelines still apply to British Show Racers http://www.americanshowracer.com/ColorGuidelines.html
pjc Posted July 18, 2009 Report Posted July 18, 2009 Very roughly, the fancy people call mealy "Red Bar" etc but basicaly yes. There are colours on there that we don't see in Show Racers, Andulusian being one of them. Also there are no decent Whites (being worked on) or Blacks show racers either.
little sam Posted July 18, 2009 Author Report Posted July 18, 2009 PJC How did you do at Blackpool with your show racers mate ?

Glassfeather Posted July 18, 2009 Report Posted July 18, 2009 Not sure if anyone has mentioned this already but there are show racers for sale advertised in this month's Feathered World: Quality Show Racers Reds, Mealies, Blues and Chequers from £25 each Due to having a small loft set-up room is now required. Les Carter (Birmingham) 0121 2437538 or Mob 07904 620606
pjc Posted July 18, 2009 Report Posted July 18, 2009 is anyone showing at the royal welsh next week Prob with Royal Welsh is its to early, to have a serious go at it you need to keep the birds paired and sitting to hold the moult back which will then put them behind when the proper show season starts.
Guest Freebird Posted July 18, 2009 Report Posted July 18, 2009 Any chance of some photo's of the hens PJC. I'd love to see them mate, thanks.

pjc Posted July 19, 2009 Report Posted July 19, 2009 Any chance of some photo's of the hens PJC. I'd love to see them mate, thanks. I'll try and take one latter showing the colour, not a good time to take pics as they are heavy in the moult.
showman Posted July 19, 2009 Report Posted July 19, 2009 Anyone who wants to learn more about show racers, should definitely get their hands on a copy of Doug McClarys'book....PIGEONS FOR EVERYONE. This will give you a really good insight into what is basically required.
