snowy Posted October 12, 2005 Report Posted October 12, 2005 as a new starter, & preparing to race in 2006, i fancy the long distance racing, is there any particular breed or strain that is good for longer distance that you would recomend. thanks
jimmy white Posted October 12, 2005 Report Posted October 12, 2005 hi snowy, if your going to try for the distance it is quite a long patient game, but you would be well rewarded in the end, my advice would be to forget about all the fancy adverts and try and get birds that are either bred off distance winners or grand children off distance winners, no matter what breed they are, and try and form your own team
snowy Posted October 13, 2005 Author Report Posted October 13, 2005 thanks jim, will look more into it.
tam pepper Posted October 17, 2005 Report Posted October 17, 2005 hi snowy bear in mind there are only a few long distance races
Guest Silverwings Posted October 17, 2005 Report Posted October 17, 2005 good advice from jimmy ,dont get blinded by all sales hype and adverts. and a real good pointer from tam pepper. ! in out area ( west midlands ) most of the interest is for shorter distance racing ,birdage and interest for the channel is on a downward spiral and sometimes results in clubs canceling one or more of their channel races ! try and aim at one or two breeding pairs only ,dont flood the loft with them breed your own youngsers from them ,. and dont train them with the sprint pigeons ! teach them to adopt their own pace , try and obtain birds from good distance lofts near to you ,dont wory to much about breeds , if this fails their seems to be some exelent distance flyers on this site who would help set you going ? with the odd bird or two !
snowy Posted October 17, 2005 Author Report Posted October 17, 2005 thanks silver wings, yes one very kind member sent me 2 quality young birds down from scotland recently, (J.W) and am reading up more on the distance birds, but like you said, im in no rush for results & races, so may breed a couple in the spring, i just think that they are much more inteligent than the sprint birds & a few people have won the shorter races with these kind of birds too. (jim, both birds doing fine & very healthy)
Guest Posted October 19, 2005 Report Posted October 19, 2005 i dont think there is a particualary good strain for long distance birds just concentrate on makin sure that the family have some long distance blood (if ya know what i mean). all the best with the long distance racing like already said it is a patience game but well worth it in the end aall the best paul carter
Guest shadow Posted October 20, 2005 Report Posted October 20, 2005 As a novice I would concentrate on inland racing for a couple of seasons, while trying to get a distance team together as you will find the best age to look for success from distance pigeons is two year old onwards., and if you get a bad race from the channel it will upset all your plans. Good luck fly hard fly fair.
snowy Posted October 20, 2005 Author Report Posted October 20, 2005 cheers carter n shadow, yes will not have all distance birds. thanks again all. & see you saturday silverwings. thanks again
jimmy white Posted October 21, 2005 Report Posted October 21, 2005 snowy. allthough the pigeons i sent you were of distance breeding, i have won many prizes with the same strain ,in shorter rces,ie topped the fed at 62 miles with a son of sir colin , won gold ring 220 miles approx, with a daughter of sir colin etc my advice would be to concentrate on breeding a decent yb team for next year, and take it from there, you really cant send birds to the extreme distance till they are at least 2 y o, so in the meantime enjoy your club racing, and who knows, in a couple of years time we might see the head lines,,,, snowy and westy win national, i think with a dream and a goal with pigeons keeps you going, and you learn as you go along,,p.s. youve done great in the short time you have kept them, and with that keenness youll soon be competing with the best,,good luck to you and westy
snowy Posted October 21, 2005 Author Report Posted October 21, 2005 yes thanks jim, we are very keen , but now in no hurry to start after listening to all the quality advice,(apart from westy he wants everything to happen at once, he is over keen , but he loves the birds & he is learning more & more each day like myself & now he is saying"did you know......." he is learning me a thing or two now! so we are now just taking it slower . thanks again all
snowy Posted October 22, 2005 Author Report Posted October 22, 2005 got 2 pairs of putmans today off a kind member "SILVERWINGS" they are beauties! i will put a couple of pics on soon & on my website. "watch out for them" ps. thanks silverwings they are crackers!

westburylofts Posted November 7, 2005 Report Posted November 7, 2005 Hi Snowy We started in the sport last year and would have to agree with what has been said, take your time and get some age on the birds RAY
Guest Posted November 7, 2005 Report Posted November 7, 2005 Jimmy White, Have you got any proven distance hens that you may want to part with, as Ive got a few distance cocks that I need decent hens for, but I dont race hens, so dont know if mine are any good?
snowy Posted November 7, 2005 Author Report Posted November 7, 2005 Hi Snowy We started in the sport last year and would have to agree with what has been said, take your time and get some age on the birds RAY cheers ray, yes, a lot of people i know breed loads of young birds, each year & seems as if they push & rush them too much & end up with a handfull of birds that dont really do too much, i remember my uncle when i was a kid & he had a goodteam of old birds that done the buisness nearly every race,. yes thought hard, & going to take it at my own pace.
Shogun Posted November 7, 2005 Report Posted November 7, 2005 The Kirkpatrick's and the Jan Aarden's are said to be good long distance birds. Of course, results will also be dependent on the breeder/handler of the birds. I am planning to build a foundation family out of these two lines. Yours in Sport.
Guest CS Posted April 1, 2007 Report Posted April 1, 2007 Busschaerts and Jan Ardens are said to be good long distance pigeons but if i were you, i would send them when they are 2 to 3 years old... Good luck
Guest Hjaltland Posted April 1, 2007 Report Posted April 1, 2007 Busschaerts and Jan Ardens are said to be good long distance pigeons but if i were you, i would send them when they are 2 to 3 years old... Good luck Couldn't agree more on the age comment. I've been tempted, more than once,, to fly out yearlings and get hammered. Yearlings are still developing and are best to be treated thoughtfully. All the best.
Roland Posted April 1, 2007 Report Posted April 1, 2007 Personally I'd get double grand children of Loellas St. Vincent, Smard 1 and 11 etc. Have won nationals and even a International for GB Flyers. I also feel a lot has to do with your set up and system for Distance racing. Have never had birds pacifically for the distance, bu all my birds - mostly otrhers cast off lol - fly the distance.
