Guest TAMMY_1 Posted April 1, 2007 Report Posted April 1, 2007 Do you think it is possible to have birds ready to fly the chanel,400 miles maybe, without them having any racing during the season, just by giving them intensive training say maybe 3 tosses a week at 40 -50 miles, anybody know if this has been done or has anybody indeed done this, or has somebody tried it and it was a disaster ?
THE FIFER Posted April 1, 2007 Report Posted April 1, 2007 hi tammy i would say it depends on what the bird has done in the seasons before, and if an experienced bird it could be possible, this is only my opinion and i am not a long distance flyer so maybe u will get more info from someone who is and probably done it.
sapper756 Posted April 1, 2007 Report Posted April 1, 2007 At the quiz the other night, all 4 national flyers agreed, that they liked birds to have flown a race that gave 8 or 9 hours on the wing, prior to the chanel.

crazy pigeon boy Posted April 1, 2007 Report Posted April 1, 2007 i suppose it could be done if the birds are fit and well but i would send to a shorter chanel race first before the 400 mile
Guest Posted April 1, 2007 Report Posted April 1, 2007 need to be raced out to at least 260 miles ,I know one man and you will probably to who wins out of maidstone with them then go to the fed 400 mile race with them and still wins with them and takes very prominent open positions and wins a lot of money .

jimmy white Posted April 1, 2007 Report Posted April 1, 2007 i would say it is possible , but in saying that the bird has to be very fit and most importantly it has to be "special", i scored a good nat position with a bird never having a training toss,,,,,,but,, this bird [a broken pigeon] was separated from his hen,[on purpose,], during the separation period, he covered at least 60 miles every day on his own accord [which i knewhe would do],back to the old place . where there was no loft,, i then slipped a yb under him ,, still without seeing the hen ,or having eggs , he then scored very well from rennes,, but this bird did have 3 races,,,,also won the combine from sartilly 500 miles using the same method but "special" pigeons are very difficult to come by,,,,look at fortune lady , a double gold award winner , some performance just one of these" special" birds ,,, but , really you wont find that special bird if you dont try it but i would prefer a bird doing at least 8 hours on the wing b4 these big events [even if the 8 hours was from 100 miles ,, hours on the wing that count, in my opinion]
Guest Posted April 1, 2007 Report Posted April 1, 2007 Heard of people who obviously know what they are doing do this Tammy, think late Jock Reid, Stenhousemuir was one. I am one of 'the set-up race' group and mine will get a 300 mile shot 3 weeks before the big event.
ken Posted April 1, 2007 Report Posted April 1, 2007 HI MATE I WOULD SAY YES I HAVE AFEW BIRS HERE THAT GOT ONE 100ML RACE ONE 150ML RACE THEN INTO 400 ML AND WON THERE NEXT RACE WAS 581 ML AND WON BUT THESE WHERE EXPERIENED BIRDS GO FOR IT WHEN YOU TRANNING THEM SINGEL THEM UP AND MAKE THEM THINK THE GOOD ONES WILL GET HOME
ken Posted April 1, 2007 Report Posted April 1, 2007 MEANT TO SAY I HAVE JUMPED YBIRDS FROM 150 ML INTO 400 ML AND GOT THEM DIDENT WIN BUT I GOT THEM
Guest TAMMY_1 Posted April 1, 2007 Report Posted April 1, 2007 the five birds i was toying the idea with all flew 500+ last year when we raced from falaise, just wanting to try something different as nobody in the club is touching norman orr from over the chanel, the birds were timed but me along with everybody else was miles behind him as has been the case most years from these races, know his birds are something else because he timed one cock in our three longest races going to one every two weeks, huntingdon and off a week , maidstone and off a week and away to france and was his second or third bird from france
Guest Posted April 1, 2007 Report Posted April 1, 2007 TRAIN THEM HARDER THEN THAT WAY YOU GET THEM FITTER
Guest TAMMY_1 Posted April 1, 2007 Report Posted April 1, 2007 TRAIN THEM HARDER THEN THAT WAY YOU GET THEM FITTER what would you call harder than three 40 mile tosses a week ?
Guest Posted April 1, 2007 Report Posted April 1, 2007 Tthats only equiveleant to three hours work a week and you expect them to fly 11/12 hours think about it
Guest WINGS 04 Posted April 1, 2007 Report Posted April 1, 2007 i was trying to get a birds ready for a 500 mile race 2 years a go this was it first tranning toss of the year and it got hawked it first race that year was 60 miles then in to 360 miles it was my 5th bird home this year that bird was 30th section snfc newbury then in to alecon just out of races time then back to the last snfc race 6th section yes i think it is possible to do this tammy
carl Posted April 1, 2007 Report Posted April 1, 2007 Tthats only equiveleant to three hours work a week and you expect them to fly 11/12 hours think about it Good point sammy, got me thinking now
Guest Posted April 1, 2007 Report Posted April 1, 2007 Tammy I have found it beneficial to train into the wind to get them fitter. It's not necessarily the distance they train every day it's how hard you made em work. Then you could separate the pairs and they will put in a lot of hours around home on their own aswell. I have taken some hens away in the past from the naturals and you wanna see how much work the cocks put in. They display to the other hens all day long on open hole but the other hens are not interested as they are already paired. It don't stop those boys tearing the sky up in the hope. lol
Guest Posted April 1, 2007 Report Posted April 1, 2007 Speak to Rose aswell, I know her and John have put birds from the training basket straight in to Palamos with good success. You have to know your birds though!!
speedbird Posted April 1, 2007 Report Posted April 1, 2007 i think they most defo need at least 2/3 races with 2week rest before 400mile race with plenty of training 3times per week if on natural or plenty of loft training if on widowhood
me Posted April 1, 2007 Report Posted April 1, 2007 Definetly possible Tammy lad if I remember correctly Knox Bros of Dunbar won a Scottish National with a hen called Summerfield Princess round about 1972. Least I think it was that hen it was certainly a doo from Dunbar that put in a tremendous performance from the "national" and it was its first race of the season.

Guest Posted April 1, 2007 Report Posted April 1, 2007 I think the birds have to have 7/8 hour fly prior to 500+ i cant see how you can get a bird fit for a race like that unless they have time on the wing they might be fit to jump to 300/400 but not to 500+ tammy its like a footballer coming back from injury all the training in the world wont make him match fit the other match fit players will make him look like he is not fit they will be much sharper on the ball and thinking faster so my ans. is no (hop skip and jump thats the ans.)

me Posted April 1, 2007 Report Posted April 1, 2007 just been thinking Summerfield Princess was a spare hen. It might have been a hen of Donaldson Bros that took 2nd open Nantes.
