It looks like I have a pair of pergrines moved into my area. Often see a single one passing through at this time of year, but there is at least one been chasing the birds for about 2-3 weeks, (finally got one at the weekend) I have seen on here some insecticide you put on your birds neck/shoulders supposedly makes them taste bad. Can you tell me the name of this stuff and how easy it is to get?

Does it actually work?

I dread to think what might happen to my yb team (all 12) if these things are setting up home.

Thanks

Ivamectin, dont think it is readily available over the counter because I have to get a farmer to get it for me

Joe Murphy attempted to push ivermectin as a repellant thro the BHW a year or so ago, it is a cattle wormer and a poison and if it is used with the intention to kill a bird of prey it is illegal and could cost you a lot if caught. SHU also took veterinary advice which in addition to confirming the legal aspect, confirmed you weren't doing yourself or the bird any health favours either using it.

No, my intention would not be to kill them. I was under the impression if they took pigeons from that area, they would taste bad and would leave that flock of pigeons alone. Thought I read some of the Welsh lads had had some success with this. Also thought it had no effect on the doos.Haven't seen the BHW article.

Thanks for the quick replies.

Always wore rubber gloves when applying it bruno, and was never my intention to kill hawks . use only as a good wormer and lice repellant, know farmers who have used it for donkeys years and has never done their pigeons any harm in the slightest, wonder how they could determine what you were using it for and if it did unluckily kill a hawk by mistake how would they come back to you

I have ivomecced my birds for years for worms and lice not realising it could be a hawk deterent.I don't think it does the hawks much harm because they've probably eaten a good 25 of mine over the years and the bloody things are still flapping about.

Although my post went up after yours Tammy, was actually processing mine at same time as yours and was a reply to original post and not your own.

The reason I posted was to name the product and give 'the other side' to allow the member to make an informed choice based on all the known facts.

Take your point on proof; but would refer you to recent case where a pigeon fancier was convicted of an offence under the same Act and fined several hundred pounds for just being in possession of a trap which he claimed he used for another purpose. (crows I think). Sounds to me what swung the conviction was the link that RSPB has made between pigeon fanciers and bird of prey deaths which gives a legal precedent of  'likely intention' as far as our particular group is concerned - thanks to the actions of the few, we may all be regarded as potential criminals, and as I understand it, its Civil Law, rather than Criminal, so the standard of proof needed for a conviction is a lot less than 'beyond reasonable doubt'.

An example of difference between Civil and Criminal Law proof :-

Civil Law ... "balance of probabilities" (i.e., it is "likely" that the defendant is guilty). A good example of this is the O.J. Simpson criminal trial. While it was not proven "beyond a reasonable doubt" that he murdered his wife; it was proven in the subsequent civil trial that, based on the "balance of probabilities," he had been responsible for her death, which subsequently led to the financial award to the victim's family.

Has to be the POUR ON and am willing to buy some with any others  to share it with, about £70 a large Barrel like. But Bruno it is really purely to control Lice, ticks / worms etc. and have no intentions of feeding any perigines, with it on them or not!

Have asked the same question many times, Sammy.  I think Chrissy's post proves this is just another Urban Legend.

I have used this product for several years as well as most of my pigeon neighbours. We get hit daily by the falcons , sometimes 3 or 4 at a time. I have to breed an extra 50 - 70 birds each year to cover the losses around the loft due to the attacks. My neighbours also do the same. So i would say that it being a falcon detterent is pure ****.

i have used this with no probs at all at least to the pigeons , i can get it on prescription from the sacc, with out any bother,, but the vet does know me and trust me,,,,,, just a point of interest a neighbour took her budgie to the vet [i bred budgies] the vet gave her 10 ml of baytril[ 2 teaspoons full ] charged her £30 ,,,the problem was scaly face which was treated with an ointment that cost £i ,75,,,, bird now cured ,,,,owner skint ;D ;D ;D

Have to agree with my countryman nonynorm, Lots of fliers use ivomec over here & we lose quite a considerable number to the falcons every year. It don't make a dent in the barstards!
