jordanp31 Posted April 22, 2007 Report Posted April 22, 2007 Went in the loft today and saw a pair on the floor with an unpaired cock in their box pecking and feeding their squeak. The squeak has no feathers on its head now and looks a right mess. I am sure this cock has been pecking the squeak. Will the feathers grow back soon and what should i do to stop this happening again???
Roland Posted April 22, 2007 Report Posted April 22, 2007 Must remove the offender, seems it is impateince and keen to mate... Needs a nest box away from the others if possible, and locked in it's nest box with his hen.
jordanp31 Posted April 22, 2007 Author Report Posted April 22, 2007 His hen got 'hawked' about a month ago...left him with the squeaks to look after and he didnt rear them...
Roland Posted April 22, 2007 Report Posted April 22, 2007 No he probably won't... needs isolating till remated and has settled with a hen.
Wiley Posted April 22, 2007 Report Posted April 22, 2007 sounds like a scalping, they may grow back they may not! ive seen cases so bad that you can litterally see the bone on the head! Horrible site to see

Peckedhen Posted April 23, 2007 Report Posted April 23, 2007 I had a youngster scalped this time. The feathers have regrown and you can't see where the damage was but, it's put the bird back - it's not yet flying out with others the same age. I hope in time it will catch up! :-/
jordanp31 Posted April 23, 2007 Author Report Posted April 23, 2007 cheers peckedhen do you know how long the feathers took to re-grow??? did you seperate the offender????
Peckedhen Posted April 23, 2007 Report Posted April 23, 2007 Hmm, can't really remember how long they took to grow - maybe three/four weeks. I moved the baby and its nest mate into the young bird loft and then allowed it's father in three times a day to feed it. My young birds are in the same loft as the breeders - separated by a wall so the cock just had to run through the door - it soon got the hang of what to do!
Roland Posted April 23, 2007 Report Posted April 23, 2007 WHAT YOU MEAN LIKE THIS ;D Yes... but a lot better looking lol.
