This is my loft layout. I want to start racing soon so i would like to know whether my loft is good enough to race from. The main section has a pitched roof with 12

nest boxes and 30 flat perches. on the front of the main section is an aviery which the birds have constant access to.Their is also a 4'x4' aveiry with v perches installed. I have room for another 4'x4' section, and would like to know what you would do with it if you were in my situation... ;)

It depends if you want to win every race and be competitive etc. The top lofts (im generallising I know) generally have a few systems going on, so theres always a chance of one being on blob. But if you want to race natural and enjoy watching the birds come home, then you could race to any size loft. More space and less birds definately makes for better conditioned birds and therefore better results  ;)

Thanks for the advice there boys... ;)

Would you say that i would be able to race widdowhood with this loft??? I think i might make a new section so that i could split hens and cocks over the winter.

For widowhood you really need a seperate loft away from the noise from the hens and also from the noise of the YBs flying and landing on the roof etc. My widowhood loft is only 10 ft from the YBs and hens and the cocks used to go daft when the YBs were out. So ive had to fit blinds to block out shadows and put the radio on to block out noise etc.

Would have to disagree Steve entirely. The closer the pecking order, the more content, and competative the birds without any shaddow of doubt. Further I'd like to point out that Natural flyers are more than holding their own at all distances now... especially in not so good weather I.e why they may wel domnate the early races, hold teir own mid season, and at season's end in harsh weather and distance will dominate.

I cant think of anything worse than having two many birds in a section. Pecking order is fair enough, but the fewer birds in a section the better condition the birds appear to be in, from personal observations!!

Ah! Have you never been in a loft where as soon as you take a bird of a top perch it is nigh instantly took up by another?  I also take it that you have never then had the privelge of seeing upteen birds clambouring in a ole Loft / Barn and been aghast at their absolute fantastic condition. Hence I'm sorry to say that you haven't obviously. FOr your last comment again is sadly without any foundation, except to to relate to 'Human' needs as to the reality of the very essence of nature and it's many wonders... many defeat many peoples logic, because it isn't in terms of human.

;D ;D ;D, ive never visited a top loft that has overcrowded sections. The trend being more boxes than pigeons. An article on Mike Lycett in the BHW for example, has very few pigeons per section and his results speak for themselves. Pecking order causes stress, stress causes disease. Wild pigeons living in barns, have access to the outside all day long and use the barn for nesting, roosting and safety from predators etc. Racing pigeons generally spend 22 out of 24 hours indoors, so cant really be compared to pigeons living in barns, unless raced on open hole.
