Wiley Posted April 29, 2007 Report Posted April 29, 2007 i agree with sammy, but i find 20 pigeons allows me to compete to a fairly good standard, and about 50 babies thats myself personally
jordanp31 Posted April 29, 2007 Author Report Posted April 29, 2007 sammy I dont have a very big loft... a 6x4ft and 4x4ft with a 2x6ft aveiry... is this ok to race from and how many birds would i be able to keep???
madmaxlofts Posted April 29, 2007 Report Posted April 29, 2007 if that was me id use the 6x4 for 16 widdowhood cocks the 4x4 id use for about twentish young 1ns and id convert the avery for widdowhood hens on poles or buy another shed
jordanp31 Posted April 29, 2007 Author Report Posted April 29, 2007 Cheers madmax that has helped me alot... I have perches already installed in the aveiry so i will probly do what you said. I cant really get a new shed because me parents are fed up with me taking their garden up ;D I just want to get racing with a basic set up and then see what happens... ;D ;D
ALF Posted April 29, 2007 Report Posted April 29, 2007 if that was me id use the 6x4 for 16 widdowhood cocks the 4x4 id use for about twentish young 1ns and id convert the avery for widdowhood hens on poles or buy another shed THATS A LOT OF BIRDS FOR SUCH SMALL LOFTS MAX :-/ :-/
madmaxlofts Posted April 29, 2007 Report Posted April 29, 2007 youd easy get 16 coks in there maybe the young would be a bit tight though
ALF Posted April 29, 2007 Report Posted April 29, 2007 youd easy get 16 coks in there maybe the young would be a bit tight though BUT WHERE WOULD YOU PUT 16 NESTBOXES???
Guest Posted April 29, 2007 Report Posted April 29, 2007 Way too cramped...that is where all your problems will start, disease, fighting, etc, etc, you'll be on to a looser before you've even begun
madmaxlofts Posted April 29, 2007 Report Posted April 29, 2007 on the back wall 6 ft = 4 across 1 1/2ft wide 4 down = 16 boxes loads ov space there
madmaxlofts Posted April 29, 2007 Report Posted April 29, 2007 i dont think 16 pigeons in a 6ft shed is over cramped
ALF Posted April 29, 2007 Report Posted April 29, 2007 on the back wall 6 ft = 4 across 1 1/2ft wide 4 down = 16 boxes loads ov space there GOT TO DISAGREE MATE I'D NEVER PUT THAT MANY WIDOW COCKS IN SUCH A SMALL SECTION
madmaxlofts Posted April 29, 2007 Report Posted April 29, 2007 how many joung birds would you put in the same space?
ALF Posted April 29, 2007 Report Posted April 29, 2007 how many joung birds would you put in the same space? MAYBE ONLY ABOUT A DOZEN TO 15
jordanp31 Posted April 29, 2007 Author Report Posted April 29, 2007 I have 12 nest boxes in the 6x4 loft on the back wall and 20 perches 10 on either side...
madmaxlofts Posted April 29, 2007 Report Posted April 29, 2007 MAYBE ONLY ABOUT A DOZEN TO 15 thats 1 more than you would put in there plus there desent sized boxes my cocks rearly leave there boxes unless there out or getting grit or minerals or water
madmaxlofts Posted April 29, 2007 Report Posted April 29, 2007 I have 12 nest boxes in the 6x4 loft on the back wall and 20 perches 10 on either side... now thats a max ov 32 that is to much
ALF Posted April 29, 2007 Report Posted April 29, 2007 thats 1 more than you would put in there plus there desent sized boxes my cocks rearly leave there boxes unless there out or getting grit or minerals or water I SAID I WOULD ONLY PUT 12 TO 15 YOUNG BIRDS IN A SECTION THAT SIZE NEVER OLD WIDOW COCKS
jordanp31 Posted April 29, 2007 Author Report Posted April 29, 2007 even though i have 12 nest boxes i have only got 5 pigeons after a bad month of lossing 6 by mr hawk :'(
ALF Posted April 29, 2007 Report Posted April 29, 2007 whats the dif PERSONAL CHOICE THATS ALL I LIKE MY BIRDS TO HAVE PLENTY OF ROOM AND I THINK THE AMOUNT YOU ARE PUTTING IN SUCH A SMALL LOFT IS TOO MANY REMEMBER THEY WILL HAVE THEIR HENS IN THERE ASWELL AT THE BEGGINING OF THE SEASON SO THAT MANY IN SUCH A SMALL SECTION ie...32 OLD BIRDS AND IF THEY HAVE ANY YOUNG YOU WOULD JUST BE ASKING FOR PROBLEMS IN MY OPINION
madmaxlofts Posted April 29, 2007 Report Posted April 29, 2007 then he can open the avery up for more space
ALF Posted April 29, 2007 Report Posted April 29, 2007 then he can open the avery up for more space NOT THE WAY I'LL BE DOING IT BUT YOU CARRY ON...ALF
Guest Posted April 29, 2007 Report Posted April 29, 2007 If you have 16 widow cocks do you not need 16 widow hens at the start of the season thats 32 birds in that small loft way way over crowded i would think
