Hi Peeps,

My name is David from London and am hoping to join the sport early next year. I raced pigeons till I was about 16 and then gave up. Well that was many moons ago and I would really like to get into it again. Can anybody give me some guide lines about how I would go about getting a loft and then some nice pigeons to start off with. Also do you need Planning Permission to put a loft up? I only have a 30ft garden and was hoping for now to get a bout a 12 by 8ft loft to begin with. Any advice would be great.

Thanks

i shouldnt imagine you would need planning permission to build a loft that size, but maybe need council permission ,if youve raced bird b4 you should have clue about them , but to start up, and race successfully i would , buy [or better still get :)]  latebred pigeons , bred direct, off generations of winners, at the distance you intend trying. a dozen real quality pigeons could get you off to a good start, and breed you a full team of ybs, for next year ,," patience is the game", listen learn and look at everything to do with pigeons ,,,,and if your taking tips off fanciers ,, make sure their winners :)   , good foundation stock is a must b4 you kick off ,,,remember the old sunday school chorus :) ,,",the wise man built his house upon the rock" :)  because its so true  :) :) :) :),,,,,,,,,from there on,, go on valium ;D ;D ;D    best of luck to you my freind , im sure the forum will help you no end :)

Thanks Jimmy,

I suppose I do know the basics about pigeons still eg:

Sexing the birds, the "eye" exam, etc etc. I suppose I will pick things up quickly again but I am afraid that I forgot a lot of information so will do some studying before I buy my loft early next year. Can anyone recommend a place to purchase a loft?

If your not racing till next year, use this year to get a really good loft and keep an eye on who's winning in your local area. Then try to buy birds of them next year. But get the loft right from day one, or you will be changing things all the time. The flying vet book is a good read. Good luck  :)

Don't know if you are in the area of a couple of clubs but if you are, find out which club is the best to race in for whatever racing you are interested in: Distance or sprint. and get the application in as soon as you can for the AGM next season or maybe even join this season, then you could go down there on Friday nights and see how the clubs run and what the peeps are like. Dunno if you are in the same address as you raced last time you had birds but make sure the club membership is open for applicants in any club that you fancy. Some clubs by me have limits on membership, then it is one out one in.

Welcome to the forum and back to the sport  ;D

Hi Y'all

Can someone tell me how I go about joining a club as I have no idea. The thing is that I am originally from South Africa and have no idea things work here.

Thanks

You need to find out whose boundaries cover where your loft is,could be eligible for 1 local flying club or even 3 or 4.Find out which clubs other local fanciers are in,get to know them and decide which club or clubs suit you best then write a letter asking to join.If you don't know any local fanciers yet the RPRA or county fed secretary should be able to point you in the right direction

Hi

I have looked at different websites about clubs but none seem to be anywhere near where I live. Will keep looking tho.

Rose, I live in Morden, Surrey.
