What is the safest remedy to remove light oil or grease from feathers?

My last return from Messac came Sunday afternoon looking very wet and bedraggled, but he must have found cover in an industrial site because he's got oil on his head, throat and back. Any ideas would be helpful. He doesn't seem to have swallowed any as he's out flying okay today, just looks a mess.

try dabbing with meths or lighter fuel wont harm the feathers and should take of oil as long as it is light and not heavily saturated

Experts use warm water and mild soap, but that is for heavy oil spills. Reckon warm water and washing-up liquid would do the job for light oil contamination. Experts also rinse with warm water. Cold water seems to be out.

You are reading something into my post that isn't there. I too was replying to the original post and my reply referred to heavy oil spills and the people who look after wildlife caught up in it: have seen birds being washed but never thought to ask what the detergent was. As irritants go, reckon oil and grease would be more harmful than washing up liquid - and it is a quick wash & rinse job repeated several times - rinsed off with warm water .. surely no harm at all?

Watch out, you are also washing its own natural oils out of its feathers, so the bird looses its resistance to rain/bath for a couple of weeks. Should be fine if it hasn't swallowed any of it.
