davebuttle Posted June 3, 2007 Report Posted June 3, 2007 As per the title. How do i stop them fielding, some of the birds are ok they fly return to the loft, wanting food. But a lot of them go into the field and sit and peck at the grass or mole hills. I have oyster grit in all the time, minerals too. Fresh water (with electrolytes every other day) (cider vinegar once a week) they all have the same food rations, give hemp (with a splash of aniseed oil) to tempt them in(works some times). If i give them any less then they would bre starved. I feel as though they are missing some vital minerals? Any ideas? They all look fit and well and have been wormed and vacinated. Thanks Dave Just put in a lettuce washed and drained with salt today but they were not too bothered by it.
Guest Posted June 3, 2007 Report Posted June 3, 2007 get ya cell a couple of freshly dug mole hills morning time is the best time to collect them and sprinkle some hemp seed into them and keep it in front of them all the time ,try that ;D ;D ;D
Roland Posted June 3, 2007 Report Posted June 3, 2007 ole Hils are one of the finest sauces of Vitamins / Minerals... I use to bring a couple on the way home from fetching the 'Spring Water' . Replaced it regularly every second day or so... got the lot! I often ask why stop birds fielding, they know better than you. Was a time it was encouraged, and also the mineral trouhs and salt packs. Yes I know it was frown upon when the DDT scare was prevalent and did a lot of damage to all kinds of country life. Spraying with harmful stuff etc. But most regulations means that (MOSTLY) the land workers have to be careful what they put down, and / or are allowed to put out. I see that the "Australia to phase out use of dimetridazole// 24 May 2007 The Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA) is to phase out the use of the veterinary product dimetridazole, which is used to prevent swine dysentery in pigs. A review by the agricultural and veterinary chemicals regulator found dimetridazole to be a potential carcinogen and that its use in food-producing species poses undue risks to workers and consumers. “As a result of this review, we now propose to cancel the registrations and label approvals for dimetridazole products used in pigs, chickens and turkeys destined for human consumption,” said Martin Holmes, programme manager (Veterinary Medicines). ‘We have proposed a two-year phase out period. The APVMA will issue new instructions on how these products are to be used and handled during this period,” Holmes said. Holmes said the APVMA recognised there would be impacts of this decision for the pig and poultry industries but that public health and safety was a mandated responsibility for the regulator’. ………………………….. Just another thought. Rat/mouse bait usually has something in it to stop the action of Vitamin K. Aspirins also? But am diversing a bit here so ...
Guest Paulo Posted June 4, 2007 Report Posted June 4, 2007 I wouldn't worry about it dave. Just train the bollocks off them as soon as they are ready so they are fit and they'll still win. The top man in our club had his team of furity pigeons sitting in the fields all day so he just banged them down the road and he got placed quite highly.
Guest paulrstokes Posted June 4, 2007 Report Posted June 4, 2007 Keep them in for a couple of days and give them some of the clay blocks you can buy, that should stop them
Guest Posted June 4, 2007 Report Posted June 4, 2007 Just a couple of points If the field is adjacent to your loft, and its just that you don't want them to go in there, maybe try lobbing a coloured ball amongst them when they are over there. Soon get the message. Was worried about greens mine were eating in the flower garden; remembered long ago used to put a lettuce in loft once in a while for them. Tried same few months back, birds weren't sure about 1st one in (little gem, Asda, pack of two, 38p) that lasted around three days - next one in from same pack was gone in a day, and same ever since, go thro 2/3 a week, and now YBs have a taste for them... Lettuce fits into an old oblong pate dish, so stays clean, birds eat every bit of the green leaves right down to yellow bit - they're not fussed on that tho and leave it..

jimmy white Posted June 4, 2007 Report Posted June 4, 2007 this is a habit which is very difficult to get rid of,usualy learned by old birds [ or birds in the feild] only thing i can suggest is allways have a handfull of conditioner on the loft roof b4 landing , but when they start training from ,A to B then in ,they should overcome that problem then ,[some good tips on previous posts ]
