Guest CS Posted June 10, 2007 Report Posted June 10, 2007 How does your road training change after your first race has been flown? Do you train less often, or just from shorter distances than before the races started?

Guest CS Posted June 18, 2007 Report Posted June 18, 2007 After the first race, train them at 10 miles, tues, wed, thurs
Guest Posted June 18, 2007 Report Posted June 18, 2007 I would never dream of training young or old birds after their first race. What is the point? They know the way home.
Guest Posted June 18, 2007 Report Posted June 18, 2007 Frank, could you say the same before the first race.........do you train them to be fit enough for the first race or to find their way home? Would you train them after the first race to improve their fitness? Alan
Guest Posted June 19, 2007 Report Posted June 19, 2007 Youngsters should be fit before you even consider training them. My first toss is about 1mile or so, (that is to get them used to the basket). Then 2 x 5 miles, 2 x 10 miles, 2 x 20 miles 1 x 30 miles (finished). After the race they loft exercise Monday evening, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday(Morning & Evening). Then Friday morning. It makes life simple for you and the youngsters. Its condition that wins, not up the road every day. I have done it in the past and completely ruined team after team of young birds.
eastcoaster Posted June 19, 2007 Report Posted June 19, 2007 What if they stop flying at home after half the races ? (what happens to us every year) :)

Guest Posted June 19, 2007 Report Posted June 19, 2007 If youngsters fail to exercise then they are not in condition. Your feeding could be at fault or it could be the general health of them. Possibly Ornithose. Putting youngsters in the basket that won't exercise is wrong.
