Guest MBpigeonguy Posted June 19, 2007 Report Posted June 19, 2007 hi im looking for someone to help me with nest boxes, what are the main mesurements for a nest box. and how should i make them? and also nest fronts,
Roland Posted June 19, 2007 Report Posted June 19, 2007 Two parts, both about 15 wide by 12 deep... this is if you wish to have more than two rounds. Mine are 12 inches square, and I only have one round, another for late breds most season. The reason for the extra room is that on a rare accasion the cock bird when drivinng the hen back to nest can become intolerant of the young and wants them out the way... and may peck and scalp them ... but the young should have been away before perhaps. Mine deffinately are ... But every one to their own. Many cock birds if overpowering or allowed will try and comadere all the nest boxes.... So a foot square with a empty one closed of and then open will work too. But in the real world, the ideal nesting is just shelving and bedding, and the floor. They thrive better, race more ardently or course, and are more happy, hence the first part needed, Contented!
Guest MBpigeonguy Posted June 19, 2007 Report Posted June 19, 2007 so do u have nest fronts on them? my advisers boxes are 2 feet long and 18 inches hiigh and 18 inches deep.
Guest Posted June 20, 2007 Report Posted June 20, 2007 I think it is down to individual choice. I chose ready-made plastic nest fronts, I got their length and height and 'single-leaf' depth and these became the measurements for my nest boxes. Started with drawing it on paper. I made up the boxes from scrap threequarter inch chipboard, and again my choice was 4 tiers high with bottom box floor about a foot off the loft floor, and the top box floor slightly above my chest level ... so that all parts of all boxes were within easy reach for cleaning etc. None of the birds sit above my eye level, and bottom box isn't a 'down on yer knees job'... Construction was nothing fancy, boards simply cut to length to fit section, bottom one supported on 2" x 2" trestle legs [positioned under the box ends] and box ends cut to correct height, and screwed through the boards. No half and half mortice joints, just plain butt joints and screws. My box fronts are 33"L x 13"H. Boxes are approx 16" deep. [Chose Marie, after buying 1 of each to compare them, - lot sturdier than cheaper widowhood type] http://www.everythingforpets.com/marie_pigeon_widowhood_front_complete.pet/use.id.5.item_id.963.dept.202/
