Good question Jimmy. I dont think I would've paired them up for this last race on Saturday as running down the road with them training does my head in. For me Widowhood is the only way to race pigeons whether it be cocks or hens. Natural pigeons dont seem to have the edge for me, However time will tell this weekend. Good luck to all who are sending. ;D

As you know Jimmy, due to personal reasons I never got to race the OB programme but the one thing I realised is that when I started breeding I have ended up with far too many birds and most of the yearlings are untested.

This year I experimented on letting my w/h cocks out once a day for 1 hour only. They were exercised between 9:30am-10:30am. My aim was to work more on getting them into a better condition early doors as in past years the cold starts to the season we've encountered wasn't conducive to this. I achieved getting them into great condition but found they were lacking that bit of zip. Whilst out exercising they flew well for the hour but they didn't exercise as I like seeing them, their behavior was different. I kept this up until the 6th race and although they were doing ok I wasn't happy. After the 6th race I started letting them out twice a day and in doing so found their form increased.

Would I do this again? If I set my stall out for the distance races later in the season YES, if to be competitive in the first half of the season NO.

i found out in the past ,my worst mistake was pairing distance birds to early,,,not just because of the flights [but that was part of it] the w hood cocks held their flights well, but too tempting to overwork them, earlier in the season ,found the naturals better paired middle of march [even the w,hoods destined for the distance] i have found in my experience that w,hood cocks ,about their best about 8 weeks on w hood ,,but as per usual with pigeons ,,,,its know your own birds :)
