HOW FAR TO RACE OUT

How  far out do you feel you have to race young birds in the year they are born  or do you think it really matters, just so long as they get racing experience, or do you think it is enough just training them without racing  (i know a couple of folk who do this ) and have success with them later on.

I used to stop the young birds I wanted for the following year at Cheltenham which is 124 mile to me, they got 2 races from cheltenham then I moved them into the old bird loft and left the rest of the young ones to race right through to Picauville (302 mile).

I dont over race mine, but i have trained them every day for 2 months now so they have had 40+ tosses which have removed the week ones, will start putting them back now!!!  Most have had or will have 2,4 or 5 races.

Spent ten years flying every race with young birds and whilst they were hard to lose they seldom won!!!!!

it depends, if your on the dark it should be ok to race em right through if natural a lot will depend on their condition, i fly mine natural and some will have to be stopped this week i think, and they've only had 2 races(103mls) ,but any i think  that are in good enough condition i send on it does'nt bother me if they've had 1 race or 10 , i've found the score as old birds regardless of how many races they had as a yb, infact 1 of my best cocks was a unraced latebred just flown round the loft as a yb,6 races to 150mls as a yearling(taking a card in last one) he scored in 4 nationals last year(2 inland/2 channel)

in my opinion a yb well trained and raced up to 100 miles without any ill effect will be as good an ob as any of them [further if you want less ob,s  ;D]  just to give an example i know a chap who didn't race yb,s at all but gave them 10= 55 mile tosses every three days all on good days ,, this" man cleaned up" the folowing year ;D

I have not completed the young bird program for a number of years and I have come to the conclusion that this is the main reason that I lose so many birds as yearlings at under 200 miles.

I intend to get this years YBs out as far as possible , moult permitting, and keep training. I've also changed to 'all weather training' on 'basics member JAS's advice, and had them out last night to 12 miles in driving rain and pretty poor light conditions ... and got them all home together in around 20 minutes..

Also hope to start 2007 late breds training this week, and continue for as long as possible: 2006 late breds have trained all year with OBs and YBs, and have now had 2 YB races as trainers, will keep them going until they are due to lay again..

Hi Tony

What about channel sprinting 250-400, i found my lightly raced 2 year olds would bomb out of Nantes esp on hard days, those that new the ropes would get home in there own time??

Hi Stu

Reading both your posts on this subject we don't differ to much in our beliefs, maybe 2 things differ. One of them is you say 'Most have had or will have 2,4 or 5 races.' I like to give mine 4 or 5 ( they've had 3 at the moment) the other difference is mine don't seem to bomb out of anywhere. ;D ;D

I race Nth road and up to 200mile our racing is out and out sprint. I've found racing them as babies is a must.

i have raced darkness yb,s right through to yb nat approx 280 miles stopped the natural ybs at 100 miles only differance was i had more natural ones left ;D but as yearlings made no differance [but wouldnt put yearlings in a basket till the weather was warm in may [ this year we had a good april but rubish since ;D] kept training natural ybs though :)
