Cabin Boy Posted August 29, 2007 Report Posted August 29, 2007 As you all know I am new to racing having only four birds, with the promise of a few young ones once new loft is built, is it worth it when I hear stories of birds getting lost all the time I find it scary to start or to proceed when this sort of thing is highlighted especially then 1000's are lost in one release Can anyone comment or reasure me please

Losses are a fact now, you will always lose birds.
xtccock Posted August 29, 2007 Report Posted August 29, 2007 cabin boy if you are a novice with only 4 birds you are not going to get far but start organising birds for next year and start with young birds iwould recomend at least 50 due to losses n training , expect to end up with 20 and then go from there,,,,, when people talk about losses and losing birds it is usually from that day or week pigeons return days months and years later for all sort of different reasons the only thing is we will never know why.
REDCHEQHEN Posted August 29, 2007 Report Posted August 29, 2007 Not all fanciers suffer heavy losses - in racing last year I lost only 3 youngsters - and all from the same race point - started off with 24

I don't plan to keep just four birds, as I said when the new loft is built i am going to have more. I have had a great response for some young birds from a number of racing men all over, but no matter how much I have I would be lose them all in one day :-/

wayne77 Posted August 29, 2007 Report Posted August 29, 2007 You need to have the right amount of youngsters that your loft will take no overcrowding, as many as you can look after and that you can afford to keep as in buy good food. When comes to racing and indeed training don't risk them all to begin with as always birds in loft for another week or day. Reason for this is you will get heavy losses on a particular day as we all do at times so need to make sure not all team. Its a great hobby and yes we sound doom and gloom when goes wrong as in losses but no better feeling than seeing one fold up and home to you. If you don't join the hobby you will never experience this great feeling. Wayne
