Iqbal Posted January 9, 2007 Report Posted January 9, 2007 Hi, I am brand new to the pigeon world and I've just bough two 6-8 weeks old beautiful white logans. I do not have a big loft, only something I built myself 4ft wide X 2ft high X 2ft depth. It has a wire mesh 3/4 across the front. (looks more like a rabbit hutch). It is placed on the decking in my rear garden On the first night I bought my birds I saw a fox near the hutch, I immediately turned the hutch so the wire mesh was against the wall. I am building a table which is 3ft 5inches high. Now on to my worry and question to all you pigeon experts out there: Can foxes break their way through wire mesh? Can foxes become immune to the utra sonic fox deterrents Any advice would greatly be appreciated. Thanks Mo
Guest shadow Posted January 9, 2007 Report Posted January 9, 2007 Yes fox's can break through wire mesh if it flimsy you need to use a thick gauge mesh to keep them out' as far as I know they do not become immune to the sonic deterents unless the unit malfunctions
birdman55678 Posted January 10, 2007 Report Posted January 10, 2007 I would say the wire will hold them out. My worry would be if the wire is connected good to the hutch. If the fox starts digging at the wire it should hold but could be ripped from the hutch and that would be the end of the doos. Good luck. Ed
gangster Posted January 10, 2007 Report Posted January 10, 2007 it wants raising off the ground as well..............
birdman55678 Posted January 10, 2007 Report Posted January 10, 2007 it wants raising off the ground as well.............. Agreed, I would get it as far off the ground as you can. Ed
stevebelbin Posted January 10, 2007 Report Posted January 10, 2007 If you search the net for articles on Keith Mott (Think on the British Homing World site), you may be able to contact him. He has his birds in rabbit hutch style lofts due to him having PigeonFanciers lung, so he would be an ideal person to talk to.
Wiley Posted January 10, 2007 Report Posted January 10, 2007 it say it would have to be a very strong wire mesh that your using couldnt be two flimpsey, A fox got into my own rabbit hutch two years ago and took a pet rabbit of ours, there clever things make sure your latch to the doors are supported well and cannot be opened to easily as this is what happened to my rabbit the latch would spin round to easily the fox must have nudged it and it was good night vienna
Peckedhen Posted January 10, 2007 Report Posted January 10, 2007 A fox will easily jump onto a 3' 5" table!! Is there any way you could attach the hutch high up on your house wall? My dovecote is about 8' off the ground! :-/ I have to use ladders to reach the birds! :
Wiley Posted January 10, 2007 Report Posted January 10, 2007 a fox can easily climb or jump up any wall i have seen them ontop of pigeon sheds and brick garages that stand well up to 9 feet high
birdman55678 Posted January 11, 2007 Report Posted January 11, 2007 A good hound will cure the fox problem but then you may have a hound problem with the neighbors.. LOL. Ed
Iqbal Posted January 11, 2007 Author Report Posted January 11, 2007 Thank you all very much for your suggestions. They are all very useful. I have just received my sonic pest repeller. I will sit and watch when a fox comes into the garden and see its response to the sonic repeller. Cheers Mo

Guest TAMMY_1 Posted January 13, 2007 Report Posted January 13, 2007 Does the deterent fuelled by green or pig energy ? pig energy
jimmy white Posted February 17, 2007 Report Posted February 17, 2007 looking at your other posts about homing them and now looking at this post , i think this is why the birds seemed unsettled and possibly how you lost them trying to home them , maybe better with a larger loft with 2 or 3 pairs
