Adam Gray Posted October 16, 2007 Report Posted October 16, 2007 ok im actualy scared of rats, i know males sould not be but i am!!! i ahve seen tons of mice in my loft!! but they will not kill a pigeon right, i have a mouse trap but no catches il see if i can find a rat trap!!! but i might not find one, btw i took the nest mate into the yb section wich is new and sapatate from the real loft, YOU SHOULD NOT HAVE RATS OR MICE ANYWHERE NEAR YOUR BIRDS. Mice will kill your pigeons not by eating them but with samonella affeting your pigeons in the various forms. I don't know what part of the country you are in ! ask local farmers if they know any ratters in the area. You have to be proactive find the holes get yourself a generator attach a hose pipe to the exhaust pop down a hole and flush them out. Kill them before they kill your birds. Take them out with a garden spade.
Guest MBpigeonguy Posted October 16, 2007 Report Posted October 16, 2007 i put the green blocks of poison under the loft a few days ago,

carl Posted October 24, 2007 Report Posted October 24, 2007 Im bringing this thread back to see if anyone has any other ideas how to rid of rats,at the end of the racing season we all start banging, building new lofts etc and also about 30 foot away from my allotment they have just clearded old allotments to put a new road through.back to the thread i have started to notice signs or rats getting into my garden leaving there mess on my paths etc,i have been putting posion down for 2 weeks now but still finding signs of rats,im using a spring trap and getting a few in there...my lofts are secure but im terrified they will get in,im also scared i will carry something bad into loft on my feet,as they carry alssorts....anymore help on this subject people
Guest Posted October 24, 2007 Report Posted October 24, 2007 JUST KEEP SETTING TRAPS AND PUTTING POISON DOWN ALL THE TIME
DOVEScot Posted October 24, 2007 Report Posted October 24, 2007 New one to me the other day Fill a barrel with water for rats or a pale for mice......keep the water sufficient enough below the top, put oats or other floating food to attract them on the top of the water. They go in thinking it is solid and end up being trapped or drowned :-/

Guest Posted October 24, 2007 Report Posted October 24, 2007 I don't know if its been mentioned before, but anything like a rat infestation should be brought to the attention of your local council [environmental health] had a problem during no-pigeons days around 20 years ago, they came out, identified runs and laid down poison. Our garden adjoined derelict railway land in those days.

Depends if your council or neighbours are pigeon friendly, would be a great excuse to get rid of lofts if the thought there was a rat infestation

Hi bruno i did phone the local council and they sent someone straight out the nextday, the chap gave me some poision i already had.How long does this poision take to work as its now been 2 weeks and still signs.I have seen a drop in signs of these things..
Guest Posted October 25, 2007 Report Posted October 25, 2007 When yi put poinson down you should also put down water as some of these poinsons make them look for water were they drink untill they actually burst open (puke)(puke)(puke)

Its not instantaneous, I think the strategy is they take it back on themselves to the nest, then a bit of mutual grooming and the whole nest snuffs it. If they are still coming there's maybe further nests, so give environmental health a call again to let them know the problem is still there - they may search further afield for the source, and keep with the poison till they are all wiped out.. and make sure they have no reason to come about your place, no food scraps etc.
