883girl Posted November 16, 2007 Report Posted November 16, 2007 I have just spoken with the International Centre at Telford where the show is this weekend. I spoke to one of the main facilitators. They have confirmed the show is on and there will be 3 auctions of birds on Saturday and 2 on Sunday. I have been assured that this has been agreed with DEFRA. So those who were looking to travel it is still worth it. ;D ;D

Was a notice in BHW today. Show part of Telford event is cancelled, but bird sales & trade stalls still go ahead. Understand & agree with Canary clubs being angry, how can a canary or a budgie that never flies free therefore never having opportunity to pick up the virus possibly spread AI disease????

wayne77 Posted November 16, 2007 Report Posted November 16, 2007 I'll be there be going both days. Shame no birds on stands but got to support to show not going to be beaten by DEFRA's stupid decission to punish pigeon fanciers
Pompey Mick Posted November 17, 2007 Report Posted November 17, 2007 Here's DEFRA's stance on auctions: "Avian influenza (bird flu): Biosecurity guidance for single flock events A single flock event is when the birds are from one source and are being presented for either sale or show. These must be birds that are kept together on a single premises. During the event they must be the only flock on the premises or it will become a gathering. The premises will include the palce where the birds (this includes the venue car park). There are common practices that should be followed by organisers of single flock events, especially when using premises at which other single flock events or gatherings occur. You should ensure that: All litter and manure within the cages, crates or baskets is contained until disposal. Any spillages outside the cage to be cleansed and disinfected immediately. All litter and manure is disposed of in a manner which does not present a risk of spread of the disease, e.g. in sealed bags for normal refuse collection, so that other birds do not have direct access to it. All show cages, crates or baskets are cleansed and disinfected before the event and the show cages, crates or baskets should be cleansed and disinfected on return to the home premises and before they are used to hold any other bird. If you attend a single flock event and purchase a bird(s), you should isolate it from your other birds to allow you to monitor for disease. Don’t be responsible for disease spread!" Why don't they allow shows with 7day Isolation , surely this should control the perceived threat of disease spread that DEFRA is concerned about.
blackjack Posted November 17, 2007 Report Posted November 17, 2007 Bruno the law is an ass i have written personally to Fred Landeg concerning exhibition canaries and pigeon racing stating the facts.Exhibition canaries are kept in birdrooms in breeding cages put in show cages and then carrying boxes taken to the show exhibited and then brought back. Risk 0% though just for interest Bruno and these ara not exhibition budgies their are a number of flocks of homing budgies about this is not a wind up either.
billy wilson Posted November 17, 2007 Report Posted November 17, 2007 my friends just phoned me and said that all canary shows are off till january defra must know that the canary shows are all finished by then.the north of england show which is the biggest one in the country have paid 600pound for the hall up till now they are not going to get there money back,if they dont get there money back that will be the end of the north of england shows.as they rely on all moneys from birdage raffles ect to keep them going.2 years ago in just about killed off the fife fancy canary club in scotland, when they lay there money out for shows also having to send scheduals out for all members and the printing of them takes nearly all the funds, they dont get compensation like the farmers,as everything is run on a shoe string billy
THE FIFER Posted November 17, 2007 Report Posted November 17, 2007 Was a notice in BHW today. Show part of Telford event is cancelled, but bird sales & trade stalls still go ahead. Understand & agree with Canary clubs being angry, how can a canary or a budgie that never flies free therefore never having opportunity to pick up the virus possibly spread AI disease???? I dont think there was going to be a show at telford anyway this year, i think thr difference between shows and sales is there is no mixing of fanciers birds in sales they all have their individual stands, where in a show all the birds from different places are brought together,
homebird Posted November 17, 2007 Report Posted November 17, 2007 Telford show no birds on the stalls but they where all out side in the vans so you pick them of the stalls on paper and go and look at them in the car park .so how stupid was that.they might as well all been let in.PLENTY OF BUYERS AT THE AUCTION £3OOO TOP LOT .

Well, if you look at Pompey Mick's post (19) the car park is part of the venue and these people had no business having mixed birds there. It is a bad show when canary shows are cancelled and organisers abide by the law (however daft that law is) risking bankruptcy in the process, compared to the greedy b'stard 'I'm all right Jack' attitude of the car boot sales at Telford.
