Guest Paulo Posted November 20, 2007 Report Posted November 20, 2007 I think people are stupid scaremongering anyway if your going to die your going to die its natures way of controlling the population and theres far too many people in the world anyway. If the virus does mutate into something that will kill humans theres not much you can do flu has controlled the population throughout history. People nowadays are selfish wimps why worry if its going to happen its going to happen and Defra putting these restrictions on pigeon racing isn't going to stop it happen because so far you can see theres a pattern emerging and its all turkey farmers like Matthews with their dodgy east european chickens. Plus with the rise in cheap flights someone could bring it into this country on their feet. The amount of times people have had a cold at work this week and I keep getting "this will be bird flu off your pigeons.'' What biosecurity measures has the channel tunnerl got in place to stop rabid bats flying into england and the like?
Guest Posted November 20, 2007 Report Posted November 20, 2007 Personal opinion, but I think you may be at the other extreme end of the spectrum, Paulo. Considered, measured, effective & reasonable precaution against a known potential threat. That's what's needed in the circumstances, but that's not what we are getting from them or you..
Ronnie Posted November 20, 2007 Report Posted November 20, 2007 Call me naive but i was half expecting it at this time of year. Nothing to do with migrating birds more to do with goverment pay outs and compensation.

EAGLEOWL Posted November 20, 2007 Author Report Posted November 20, 2007 Call me naive but i was half expecting it at this time of year. Nothing to do with migrating birds more to do with goverment pay outs and compensation. bang on ronnie i have already said this ,the poultry industries in this country will always get this problem around easter and christmas through over production of poultry ,cheaper to infect a flock then go bankrupt . i would like to see defras risk assesments of poultry entering this country from other eec countries.espeacily in the time where expecting this so called pandemic . i would also like to know why certain bird establishments have guarentees there birds would not be destroyed in a event of a massive bird flu out break in this country. this is all aload of crap in my opinion, scare mongering to bring in licenses to everyone who owns birds ,like the id card system load of crap just another way of getting more money from people. the goverment know there going to be paying millions each year to the poultry business thats why old hilary benns going to tell them in future no payments for infected poultry ,that will kill the outbreaks in the poultry business. but i bet you a dollar the goverment say the turkeys already slaughtered by these companies are safe to eat for christmas , like when madcows disease first came about ,if buying a turkey for christmas ask for a vets certificate to say its safe to eat, i bet you dont get one
Guest Posted November 20, 2007 Report Posted November 20, 2007 what happened in years gone by when they were not able to detect bird flu .......nothing. no people dying everywhere, nobody caught bird flu . so what's the big diffrence now There has never been a time when they were not able to detect bird flu - it was called fowl plague / fowl pest then. Leon Whitney's 1961 book 'Keep your pigeons flying' mentions it, and Wim Peters also calls it this in his 1998 book 'Fit to Win'. Think it is the Belgians who have the word fowlpeste which means bird flu? Nobody caught bird flu until 1997 when H5N1 infected and killed humans for the first time. What has happened is some sort of mutation took place and the virus 'jumped the species barrier' - apparently an animal disease infecting humans was unheard of before that. But as I've posted before H5N1 isn't too clever at infecting humans, the WHO figures for 2003 - 2007 are 335 cases, 206 deaths, which on the face of it, aren't really all that many, and most of these cases are associated with close-quarters exposure to infected poiltry.

Nothing to do with migrating birds more to do with goverment pay outs and compensation. Agree little to do with migrating birds, and yes it is seasonal, but I don't see any amount of hand-outs coming close to making up for the loss of your markets world-wide. One whiff of animal disease and most countries close their borders to your exports. This is the 'stuff yer UK poultry up yer jacksi' World Trade Position after just one week of AI here:- http://www.defra.gov.uk/animalh/int-trde/cins/2007/07376.htm .... and note that these include bans by Channel Islands and Ireland. :-/
Guest Posted November 20, 2007 Report Posted November 20, 2007 its funny how these big establisments keep getting it ,and to think they are supposed to be more alert about these things. the biggest farce yet to date is the bernaud matthews saga in which within a week or two he was selling produce on the same site that was the place of the infection?. and we was still banned from having shows..which i feel is dissgraceful. its like setting a criminal free and imprisoning the victim.

Agree on the Matthews bit. But I think he was made to pay for it in the end. Can't recall the actual figures - they are on here somewhere - Matthews lost something like 60% of his home business, folk here just stopped buying anything with Matthews on it, and his pr firm were to launch a £9m campaign to regain that lost business. They can spend all they like, nothing of Matthews' comes or ever will come into our home. Like I was saying even his half a million compensation disney come close .... mickeymouse money compared to what he threw away. And what ever became of his gong - never did hear what happened there, put back quietly in the box perhaps? ... just bootiful!
sammy Posted November 20, 2007 Report Posted November 20, 2007 think thats wgat should happen all over everyone stop buying turkey products like you bruno not allowed in me house :)
THE FIFER Posted November 20, 2007 Report Posted November 20, 2007 cant see anyone wanting the bird flu as its ok getting comp, but i think they will loss a lot more as people will just not want turkeys on their tables,
Guest Posted November 20, 2007 Report Posted November 20, 2007 must have good bio security measures in place :o get your turkey cheap for christmas ;D ;D i think these places believe it wont happen ere! ...then they have symptoms then cover it up till it gets out of hand then the vets/ministry is called in....by then its infected most of the birds. i dont know if im right but has there ever been a pigeon with this?..or a cage bird?..it seems that only chickens/ducks/swans that type of birds are getting it. i think that the goverment aint sure wot can catch it so that is why all bird gatherings are restricted. just hope it dont go on for too long.
