A bit of useful advice - verified by the Dorset Police .

The number does work from a mobile. This actually happened to someone's daughter.

Lauren was 19 yrs old and in college. This story takes place over the Christmas/New Year's holiday break. It was the Saturday

before New Year and it was about 1.00pm in the afternoon, and Lauren was driving to visit a friend, when an UNMARKED police

car pulled up behind her and put its lights  on.

Lauren's parents have 4 children (of various ages) and have always told them never to pull over for an unmarked car on the side

of the road, but rather wait until they get to a service station, etc So Lauren remembered her parents' advice, and

telephoned 112 from her mobile phone.  This connected her to the police dispatcher she told the dispatcher that there was an

unmarked police car with a flashing red light on his rooftop behind her and that she would not pull over right away but wait until

she was in a service station or busy area.

The dispatcher checked to see if there was a police car where she was and there wasn't and he told her to keep driving, remain

calm and that he had back-up already on the way. Ten minutes later 4 police cars surrounded her and the unmarked car behind her.

One policeman went to her side and the others surrounded the car behind.   They pulled the guy from the car and tackled him

to the ground...... ..the man was a convicted rapist and wanted for other crimes.

I never knew that bit of advice, but especially for a woman alone in a car, you do not have to pull over for an UNMARKED car.

Apparently police have to respect your right to keep going to a "safe" place. You obviously need to make some signals that you

acknowledge them I.e., put on your hazard lights) or call 112 like Lauren did.

Great bit of advice until they overtake you, cut you up, force you to stop, and then  they get you out the car and frisk you in front of everyone on the estate! Cos thats what they did to me when i decided to play smart some years ago.

I think these guys would be operating well away from a police station or built up areas, more likely to be trying this in very isolated areas :(

112 sounds like the eqivalent of the UKs 999. Think its 911 in US?

Don't know which countries would be using 112, mainland Europe perhaps? or may even be a special number that some mobile phone network companies provide which connects automatically to national network and makes a 999 call to 'regional' emergency operator responsible for the area the call originates.

Internet myth: Dial 112 to check if a covert police car is really a police car

by Murdo Maguire — last modified 2007-01-25 06:52

There is an email circulating that states a driver does not have to stop for an unmarked police car. The driver is to put the hazard lights on and phone 112 on mobile to check that the car behind with flashing blue lights is in fact a valid police car. The advice is said to be aimed mainly at lone female drivers. Is this information correct please?

112 is the emergency services number for Europe and in the UK will route to the 999 service. They will not be happy in receiving calls checking whether the car following you with blue lights flashing is a police car. Furthermore using a mobile phone whilst driving is illegal except in an emergency and could mean a fine and from 27 February 2007, three points on your licence and a £60 fine. No doubt the car following you with lights flashing will be well placed to issue a ticket.

Covert police cars are only unmarked in their covert state and once the lights are activated and the sirens switched on they are designed to be very recognisable. You should certainly stop if they activate them and you believe you are their target. Officers dealing with traffic offences will also be in full uniform. You should obviously not stop if the car does not have the requisite lights and by all means dial 112 (or 999) if you are stopped (or an attempt is made to make you stop) by a car which is not a police car.

Found this on the web - seems we should not ring 112 :o
