The White Rapido Man
dampness in a loft is the route to all evil......Dampness breeds germs......cocci in particular...

jimbobboy
Lawie: Just built a 4x8 loft this summer. Now looking to add to make it 8x16 feet. I have 18 birds right now but it is too narrow!!! Birds are flying into each other at feeding time!! Also hens don't want to tread with cocks because of crowding. New loft will have 2-5x8 and 1-6x8 sections. Loft is very dry . Good luck jimbobboy
lawrie
so 8/10 birds would be ok? i dont have the room to extend my loft, maybe 4 feet at a squeeze!
Guest shadow
if you want to fly natural remember each pair will rear two young starting with 10-14 could give you at least 20 birds and the shed is not big enough. I would try 3 pair for the first year and see how you manage. To fly a reasonable team you are looking at a loft 16 x 8 for old birds and another for young birds good luck

Guest chrisss
i do not claim to be any form of expert but to my mind the BIGGEST THING has to having the loft/shed dry it does not matter if your birds perch on bog seats and nest in orange boxes the loft itself has to be as dry as a bone [yes iam preaching to the converted here ]do not worry [or daydream] about next years babies get the loft sorted chrisss
JSTOON
Can i suggest you burn the huts out with a gas burner. We do it every year, if you spray it with virkon afterwards, you shouldnt get any problems, hope it all goes well.

Guest TAMMY_1
MIGHT TAKE A WHILE TO GET IT DRIED OUT WITH THIS BLOODY WEATHER WE'RE HAVING JUST NOW : : aye it is unbelievably bad just now, rain and wind are diabolical and it is near impossible to keep a loft bone dry when its like this
Chatrace
30 birds easy if you have an outside avirey for them also
Guest
I think you did the right thing building the loft to suit the space you have. Now you have to equip it to suit that space. I have bags of air space, but the birds themselves live in compartments much the same size as yours, roughly 4'6" x 4'6" and there's no flying about them, cos there's simply no room, the birds walk everywhere and they have become very tame. Not the weather for it just now, but you need to get it water-tight and dried-out long before you bring birds in.
