Karl, its not too soon to breed now, but the problem is will you receive your 2008 rings in time.

Obviously when you pair up approx 10-14 days the hen should lay, 21 days incubation, 5 days to ring, so if you can get your rings in 5-6 weeks ...No problem!

Yes whats the rush i pair up in mid march /early april to get the birds ready for the races that matter. We do not set a clock for club racing barring Bergarac and set for the BICC and NFC Tarbes and Saintes. It makes racing more enjoyable who wants to be racing all the time especally sprinting .I spend my weekends of gardening and watching the birds looking for signs of form in thier behaviour.Their is no need to pair so early so why do it.

i have paired up did it yesterday and as long as you have orderd your rings early enough you will get them on the 3rd of jan so i will be ok but make sure you ring you club sec or who ever you are getting the rings from and ask when you will recive them

I do that too, prefer to finnish the showing season first or it all gets to complicated trying to do both things at once, can be done, alot do but it takes the pleasure out of it which is after all what its all supposed to be about, enjoying your birds. :)

We had youngsters chipping out only 21 days after pairing up in January

I'd say 18 days incubation is the norm - these chipped after only 16 - (5 days to laying - one pair was only 4 days to laying 1st egg)

Don't get caught out

To get strong fit babies you'll need to make sure they're fed twice per day i.e. once in the morning as soon as it's light and once in the evening before it gets dark. Will you be able to fit that in with work etc? Alternatively you can feed enough in the morning to keep em going all day which will mean lots of food lying around - tends to attract our little furry friends! All depends on your circumstances I suppose! ;)

when my birds have young chip out i will feed them 3 times a day and when the young are 7 days old i will feed them 4 times a day when the young birds are 3 weeks old the cocks will be moved into a new loft and the hens will be left with the young  then in march the hens willl be put in with the cocks to breed there last round

If I read your post right, Karl, the main reason you want to pair up is to break your stock pigeons.

That's a lot of pigeons to try to break at once and you could be faced with a few upsets as a hen or cock from different pairs goes adrift for a day or two and the partner rises..

Main and best breeding season is spring, why don't you use the time to settle the OBs, pair them up, and let one partner of each pair out at a time. When he/she is coming in OK, do same with its partner. When they are all settled to loft and boxes, then start breeding.... think you'll have less grief that way.
