My young birds faced a few wind & rain races this year, first race they came home to plain tap water in the drinker and a seed mixture. That was changed in the early evening to garlic water, and normal feed, racing mixture.

Wasn't happy with recovery, so from next race they came home to a teaspoonful of cider vinegar and tablespoonful of honey in drinker. Cider vinegar was there to dissolve the honey, the honey was there to provide glucose as a quick pick-me-up. Glucose is the simplest form of sugar and can be used right away by the pigeons body. Note that cider vinegar and honey was tipped in BHW as a drink for people to soothe joint pains, if it helps ease pigeon's joint aches - which I can't confirm - that's a bonus too.

Also added G10 pellets to the seed mixture, as much of this mixture as they wanted, as a light easily digested feed. Again changed in the early evening to garlic water, and a normal feed of racing mixture.

Garlic is there to ease any aches and pains [inflammation] see off anything the bird might have picked up in the basket, and protect the other birds in the loft  from picking up anything the race birds might have brought home. They stay on garlic thro Sunday, rest & bath day with garlic in bath too [lice, mites] and on Monday water is plain tap water with a multivit added.

From 2nd race YBs were back exercising freely from the Monday, so I've decided to do this for OB & YB races from next year.

tHANKS Bruno... how bout the drop out?

I started with 13 YBs, dropped 1 in training before 1st race, and dropped 3 in racing ( 62 / 185 miles).

Also 3 lay out during racing (between 8 days and 4 weeks) and they came home after the season had finished .. that's been a common experience in our Fed this year.

Can I still race them by next year?  :-/

Is the honey for energy?

no honey is a natural antibiotic, and a natural healer, will also bring the sugar levels back up which would have been lost in the race!

main thing is peace and quiet and rest :) reheydration salts help [in my opinion[ but if birds havent recovered yet ,,safer in the loft ,,,they fight another day :)
