I'l just mention that my name is Tariq, I have two pairs of stock pigeons and am hoping to start racing in 2008 with young birds.

Here's my question. My pair of busschaerts have had eggs for a number of days now, however only the cock is incubating. I have been in at several times during the night and the day over the few days that the eggs have existed and he's constantly on them, the hen isn't doing any incubation at all - I'm sure of it. Has anyone got any experience with this? What causes it? Are the eggs likely to hatch?

Regards

Tariq.

;) what times are going in to see your birds Tariq ?? . you may find that the hen sits through the night (in the main)  ;D whilst youre at the pc or tucked up in bed  ;D ;D                                    andy

If you are breeding now, you may not be leaving the lights on long enough for the hen to get back to her nest in the evening. The cock will sit till he's relieved by his hen, but he will eventually desert them if she doesn't sit too.

The pair will have their own routine, but in the main, it's the hen who sits longest, from around 6pm to around 9am next morning. The cock sits during the day - he works 9 till 5.  ;D

I have left the lights on till 19:30 today, just been in and the cock is still on the eggs. I'l just have to wait and see what happens I guess...

:Btheres more to this Tariq ?? ,what age is the hen ,have this pair been together before ?? and finally were they seperated before you put the nest bowl in ??     ;)  andy

The pair are 07, I think about 7 months old. This is the first time either have attempted breeding.

They were not seperated prior to pairing, I bought them as a pair and havn't had them very long. They are very very keen to each other however and have definately paired up.

;) i think ,but some guess work here ,she may not sit them. but dont lose heart ,would suggest if she doesnt sit them to part the pair for a couple of weeks minimum . re introduce them and i beleive all will be well . ;D i wouldnt worry too much at present ,personally would prefer to raise youngsters a little later on than now  ;) (personal choice) putting them together end of jan/ beggining of feb will be plenty of time for ybs to be mature enough to race  ;D hope the above helps Tariq .                                           andy

i would tend to agree with alf ,,,,but at only 7 months old you may be right,, i would just let nature take its course ,,,,good luck :)

I bought them as a pair and am pretty sure it's a cock, when you compare the two birds he has a much fatter/long/round head than the hen who has a very slender head. He also makes much more noise and courts her.

I will let nature take its course, I'm sure there'll be more eggs to come. Its probably down to inexperience.
