Okitsme Posted December 10, 2007 Report Posted December 10, 2007 Hi Peeps, I have a bit of a dilemma. I have two birds that were sold to me as cocks. Both want to be paired up to other cocks but never lay eggs. They are also both 2007 birds. What do I do to find out what sex they are? This has me a bit "peturbed" to say the least. I just want to know how many pairs I have. ;D
The White Rapido Man Posted December 10, 2007 Report Posted December 10, 2007 simple...............................get a length of string about 20 inches long...... get a small strip of lead about 2 inches by half an inch and tap a hop in one end.... Tie the string to the lead. Now you have a piece of string with a piece lead hanginfg from it. Hold the bird in need of sexing, and carfully hang the 'pedulum' between the birds shoulder. There should be no movement in the lead. Keep perfectly still, lift the lead si its about 2 inches away form the birds feathers and the lead will slowly start to move on its own..................if it rotates in a circle...............its a cock..............if it rotates side to side...........its a hen. If you get the technique right...this can be 99.9% correct. how it works I couldnt tell you ................but work it does
snowy Posted December 10, 2007 Report Posted December 10, 2007 they are probly a bit young to breed yet
Guest Posted December 10, 2007 Report Posted December 10, 2007 You can also do what W R M says with a needle and thread although i thought it was swings circular or side to side for hen backwards and forwards for cock try it on some of your birds that you know the sex of it does work

Okitsme Posted December 10, 2007 Author Report Posted December 10, 2007 Hi, This is one of the birds that I am trying to sex. It was sold to me as a cock, its shacked up with another cock and I tried the pendulem thingy and it seemed to show it was a cock, I also tried it on Known Sexed birds and it really seemed to work. Now I ask you with tears in my navy blue eyes, what the hell is it!!! :-/ :-/ :'( :'(
homer Posted December 10, 2007 Report Posted December 10, 2007 hard to tell from photos but if you put a gun to my head i'd say HEN !
Guest Posted December 10, 2007 Report Posted December 10, 2007 not sure but if its paired to a cock you will know in about ten days (if it lays eggs) there was another theory i heard once about sexing birds it had to do with the rear toe if you gently push it forwards across the pad underneath it lays either straight down the middle or goes to oneside dont know how accurate it is also cant remember which means c or h

Guest mytton6 Posted December 10, 2007 Report Posted December 10, 2007 Hi The red bird , just look at its flights 99% sure if theres black splashes on its a cock if there brown its a hen David
Guest Posted December 10, 2007 Report Posted December 10, 2007 I watched my Mum do the pendulum thing once it didnt work, but I was laughing as I thought the only things missing where a couldron and a Broom stick She saw the funny side eventually :-/
Guest Posted December 10, 2007 Report Posted December 10, 2007 I've a few wotsits this year. ??) Thought I had a latebred cock in with the hens - matured and started sweeping after the hens. So put it thro with the cocks on Sunday, knew right away I had a hen, tail spread before she hit the floor, 4 cocks on the floor right away, parading around her and her showing up to them. If your birds are still split, I suggest putting the bird in with the 'other' sex for a few days if need be and watch their behaviour.
matt Posted December 10, 2007 Report Posted December 10, 2007 hold the pigeon normaly get the thumb the single toe at the back and push it against the other 3 toes if it lines up with the middle toe its a hen if to the side inbetween two of the toes its a cock 99.9%

Okitsme Posted December 11, 2007 Author Report Posted December 11, 2007 I think I will give the toe thing a try tonight. Was told by a friend that it might be a slow maturer. Maybe liking the attention but too immature to show attention to the oppisite sex. This bird was in with the cocks (paired up to another cock) for two months and nothing happened. So I am going to take a very uneducated guess and say its a cock who 1) Is not mature enough or, 2) Is Gay Thanks guys.
DOVEScot Posted December 11, 2007 Report Posted December 11, 2007 We have had same gender pairings, once we had two hens with four eggs, and two cocks that were insepirable till they matured. I have seen the coin on a thread theory, but thought the guy was moving it :-/ The same guy also checks the pelvic area to see if it is wide as it needs to be for eggs to pass through it :-/

Okitsme Posted December 11, 2007 Author Report Posted December 11, 2007 The same guy also checks the pelvic area to see if it is wide as it needs to be for eggs to pass through it :-/ I have heard about the pelvic theory too but I checked my seperated hens and they are shut. Another uneducated guess but I think they only open when the hen has laid or is going to lay. I think I just need to wait it out and see what happens.

The White Rapido Man Posted December 11, 2007 Report Posted December 11, 2007 The toe thing does work...but you can make the toes read whatever you weant it to if you dont apply even pressure when pushing them together.........YB's toes are only small....so its hard to be sure... its either a hen .....or a 'willy woofter'................as someone mentioned....you'll soon see ;D looks 'cocky' in the head to me......hens are usually more domed..... time will tell matey!!!

I thought as a boy the theory used to flat head for a cock and round/domed head for a hen???
Okitsme Posted December 11, 2007 Author Report Posted December 11, 2007 Domed or flatheaded, this is one confused bird. ;D
DOVEScot Posted December 11, 2007 Report Posted December 11, 2007 Domed or flatheaded, this is one confused bird. ;D AINT WE ALL :D IF IT LAYS EGGS IT'S A HEN, IF IT FILLS EGGS ITS A COCK, THE REST ARE PETS OR USELESS ;D
