FLAPPER 123 Posted January 28, 2008 Author Report Posted January 28, 2008 no not dumb, good point.when i picked her up she felt a bit light but still had muscle on her...she looked fine yesterday.
Guest shadow Posted January 28, 2008 Report Posted January 28, 2008 could be going light (cocci) have it checked out
FLAPPER 123 Posted January 28, 2008 Author Report Posted January 28, 2008 could be going light (cocci) have it checked out checked out by who?can i buy tablets?or anything else to sort it?
Guest chrisss Posted January 28, 2008 Report Posted January 28, 2008 i have kept pigeons since 2001 in 2002 my daughter died which stopped me racing [until this year i hope] HOWEVER whilst not claiming to an expert i have found that by the time it is spotted it is too late sorry to be a downer on this but most pills/ potions are sold for the fancier not the pigeon
lawrie Posted January 28, 2008 Report Posted January 28, 2008 if it doesnt look good then i would get rid of it before the rest of your birds go the same way! it could be a number of things. best to be safe than sorry i say.

DON'T think i would be too hasty in getting rid of it, by all means take it away from the rest till you can be sure what is wrong. get the birds droppings tested then you can treat accordingly, could be something simple.
Guest chrisss Posted January 28, 2008 Report Posted January 28, 2008 yep i would tend to agree about moving it i have only ever had one bird go light [so far god willing] i tried just about every pill/potion and the power of prayer!!! none of it worked and frankly looking back i was very lucky none of the other oaps [sorry birds] got it
sammy Posted January 28, 2008 Report Posted January 28, 2008 by the time you have noticed this it is running through your loft and quite pointless moving the bird away its better left were it is and concentrate in getting the droppings tested of all your birds to see what is the matter is it possible the bird has just laid
FLAPPER 123 Posted January 28, 2008 Author Report Posted January 28, 2008 no she has not laid,i only bought her 6 days ago and she was paired up 2/3 days later.is it anything ive done wrong since ive had her or will it have already been going wrong before i bought her?i have been putting g.s.e. in water???
Guest chrisss Posted January 28, 2008 Report Posted January 28, 2008 maybe a change of diet has caused it if you have only had her 6 days or so it might take a while for her to get used to the new food/climate of loft i always thought that most pigeon aliments had at least a 14 day incubation period
Guest IB Posted January 28, 2008 Report Posted January 28, 2008 Have you had this pigeon in quarantine or have you put it straight in with your other birds? New introductions should be quarantined for 10 - 14 days. Chances are : that the bird has picked up something from your own birds which it hasn't been challenged with before; or the cock that she has been paired up with has given her a hiding. Did she have a brick in her box to get away from the cock if he turned nasty?
oldguy Posted January 28, 2008 Report Posted January 28, 2008 this company seem to test for various problems http://www.biobest.co.uk/diagnostics/bird_sexing.html kev
oldguy Posted January 28, 2008 Report Posted January 28, 2008 Did she have a brick in her box to get away from the cock if he turned nasty? daft question but !!!....how does a brick in the breeding box prevent cock birds attacking the hen, i cant imagine the hen picking it up and hitting the cock with it

Guest TAMMY_1 Posted January 28, 2008 Report Posted January 28, 2008 daft question but !!!....how does a brick in the breeding box prevent cock birds attacking the hen, i cant imagine the hen picking it up and hitting the cock with it the hen will move on to the brick so the cock cannot peck its head, does work.
Guest IB Posted January 28, 2008 Report Posted January 28, 2008 daft question but !!!....how does a brick in the breeding box prevent cock birds attacking the hen, i cant imagine the hen picking it up and hitting the cock with it I have a half brick in one corner of all the boxes when 1st pairing up. If the cock goes OTT, she can get onto the brick, she's protected by the box on two sides and he can only come at her from one direction. She now stands well above him, so he can't scalp her - and he's now more likely to get a sore head himself if he doesn't treat her with a lot more dignity.
Guest Thunder Birds Posted January 28, 2008 Report Posted January 28, 2008 If I were you I'd be asking questions of the fancier you got the bird from. If you've only had her 6 days its more than likely that she had the illness before you got her. Paratyphoid is something that manifests itself when the birds are under stress. Moving lofts and then being paired up straight away might have pushed her too far. Have a look at the Belgica De Weerd website www.belgica-de-weerd.com
lawrie Posted January 28, 2008 Report Posted January 28, 2008 prevention is better than cure. theres no point puttin all your birds at risk for the sake of one bird. do you not have a nother shed to put it in while you have some tests done? i wouldnt keep it with the others.

Agree any sick bird should be isolated, not just to stop any potential spread of disease but to stop the others picking on her as she is weak, would give her some electrolytes personally [or abit of honey and sugar in water] to pick her up abit and a good rest somewhere quiet. Can you find out the medication history of the bird?,has it been done for coxi or worms lately?,has the person you bought them off had any sickness lately? [if he would be prepared to tell you],is it possible she could be egg bound if she was paired up prior to you getting her and she delayed laying? :-/
Merlin Posted January 28, 2008 Report Posted January 28, 2008 If its valuable as regards your breeding plans, and you have access to a vet,get him to prescribe Baytril which is a broad spectrum anti biotic,or a home remedy in case of coxi imbalance is breadsoda, mix with water and use a syringe to fill its crop on a daily basis 4/5 days. Good Luck. I f you intend to race it you might thing of disposing of it

With this experience/problem that your having now etc, if you only learn one thing out of this experience. It should be !!!!!!!, in my view. Never place any new pigeon you may happen to be given/bought in with your own birds etc. Have a holding pen somewhere where you can keep them for 3 to 4 weeks just to be on the safe side, & you may find, you will never have this problem again. In the future. Enjoy

And always isolate any sick bird away from the rest of your birds as soon as you suspect that something may be wrong.
FLAPPER 123 Posted January 29, 2008 Author Report Posted January 29, 2008 thanks for everyones advise, was going to take her to vets today but when i went to loft this morning she looked a little bit better, not as puffed out and she had some fresh water and ate some food.decided to go to local corn shop and they gave me FLOROXINE to put on the food but im thinking to use a syringe and put it down her throat so i know she is getting some....any thoughts on doing this please???
