Guest Vic Posted January 27, 2008 Report Posted January 27, 2008 Years ago, I used brushed in lime after scraping out, but I later realised that the lime was affecting the birds eyes. Their eyes appeared TOO watery, so it was not used anymore. I now scrape out, but use newspapers in every nestbox, which are withdrawn 1 page at a time each day. (both sides in standard boxes) The papers absorb any dampness, and can be folded to suit any size of box. Try it! and you will be surprised by the simplicity of it all.
Roland Posted January 27, 2008 Report Posted January 27, 2008 2 years ago I used Cat litter ... worse thing I ever did ... check out the ingrediants and treatment that have been used on it...

Guest IB Posted January 27, 2008 Report Posted January 27, 2008 If the lime you are using burns your birds eyes then you are using a hot lime which is the wrong kind. Floor White is the correct kind, an agricultural lime flour.
Guest Posted January 27, 2008 Report Posted January 27, 2008 I scrape out, use jeyes fluid then blow torch, no "coverings" used.
Guest IB Posted January 27, 2008 Report Posted January 27, 2008 I'm just starting back up & shall not be racing this year, only breeding & training yb's, I will not vaccinate these birds or their parents this year. I bet the young birds benefit from this, they will get vaccinated at the latest possible time before racing next season. I think the best time to vaccinate young birds is when they leave the nest, or at 4/5 weeks old. For a start they are easier to handle then, and you can do it single-handed. I have tried waiting till beginning of July prior to training, but I think this is too late - its too near the start of racing : you are after all in effect infecting them with a mild form of paramyxovirus, then putting more stress on them training, then racing. I did a clubmates during joint training last year - his birds got a whole two days off training after this - he didn't exactly shine in the YB races.

Cohey, I prefer "The Times" myself. Twice as thick as the Echo, but with Times 2 etc. at 70p a snip, especially if you are a Crossword/Sudoku fan. Just two papers are adequate, per box per round. Dont tell Rupert!

Guest Vic Posted January 27, 2008 Report Posted January 27, 2008 clean[ scrape] first section every day , give it a spray with jeyes fluid [on a good drying day ] with birds locked out,,,,breeding section ,,,,just bought a bale of easy bed this morning ,, will try this ,,will spray the floor first , put fan heater in ,,just to completely dry it of ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,need help g. h. ;D ;D ;D Jimmy, I too use easy bed, but only in the yb loft. It does "carry" at times on the wrong footwear. But its advantages far outweigh its deficiencies. I picked up a good tip a few years back whilst contributing regularly on Pigeon Paradise. A Good Leicester fancier advised me to put it down on the day that the clocks go forward, and remove it when the clocks go back. These times fit in perfectly for MY yb darkness system, and it was good advice indeed. ;D
doo Posted January 27, 2008 Report Posted January 27, 2008 But on the other hand they might not live long enough to benefit from it naturally - the choice is yours - but I vaccinate all birds. stock, non-racers, fan tails, racers - the lot I feel its better to be safe than sorry - prevention is better than cure By the way you should have vaccination form on you showing that your birds have been vaccianted when you take birds training - its a DEFRA rule By the way you should have vaccination form on you showing that your birds have been vaccianted when you take birds training - its a DEFRA rule In all the yearsI have had birds I have never been asked for Vaccination forms unless it was at racing night & the first one at that ........I would think you would have to be pretty unlucky to get caught training your birds ....mind you I have never won the lottery :-/
