paul l Posted January 31, 2008 Author Report Posted January 31, 2008 ye there runing the hens doing everthing but no eggs for 5 to 6 wks now
THE FIFER Posted January 31, 2008 Report Posted January 31, 2008 could be the weather, its too cold and changeable, could just be nature striking in.
Guest neil Posted January 31, 2008 Report Posted January 31, 2008 seperate them for a week, cut back on the grub big time for the first 4 days then increase slowly towards day 7,repair and allow acces to good grit and some minerals ?(fresh after feeding)
bewted Posted January 31, 2008 Report Posted January 31, 2008 do you have some extra lights in the loft to make it appear as though its longer days ? only a guess !!!!
Fair Play Posted January 31, 2008 Report Posted January 31, 2008 One of the most common reasons for hens not laying is hens being overweight, and becoming egg bound and sometimes lack of calcium (grit/mineral deficiency) and have you seen the cock treading the hens sometimes other cocks will interfere and the process is not carried properly. I am sure others on the site are more knowledgeable than me and will advise accordingly
steve d Posted January 31, 2008 Report Posted January 31, 2008 As Fair Play states birds being overweight, lack of grit or could it simply be there are to many birds in the loft. I would seperate and get the hens out for a fly if possible, then smash up some cuttlefish into powder and add it to the corn using cod liver oil for a week then try and repair again, good luck ;)
superstar Posted January 31, 2008 Report Posted January 31, 2008 agree with the overweight ideas, split up like suggested and put the hens on a strick diet of depuritive for a week or so then try again im sure they will soon go down then
carlsberg Posted January 31, 2008 Report Posted January 31, 2008 i had same problem with mine so i fed them just on barley then 2 weeks later they started coming down ,now all have laid so hens must have been overweight.[fed barley cos i read a post on here] good luck anyway hope they lay soon
jimbobboy Posted January 31, 2008 Report Posted January 31, 2008 Jimbobboy: Know what you mean!!! I've got same problem with mine!!! Males chasing , cooing etc. Hens seem dis-interested!! Going to take PB members advice!! Try again St. Val. Day
Guest IB Posted January 31, 2008 Report Posted January 31, 2008 Its a long time ago now, but remember having same problem in my first ever year breeding - put the birds up in February, and the OB racing had started (April) before they started laying. They were probably badly overweight. Wouldn't split them now. Change feeding now to 50% barley increasing to 100% barley within 3/4 days: and ration food to 1 ounce per pigeon. 2 weeks should be enough to get results, hopefully, with eggs appearing nearing end of that period.
swilcox Posted January 31, 2008 Report Posted January 31, 2008 Are they fat?? Best to split and repair in 2 weeks.
jimmy white Posted February 1, 2008 Report Posted February 1, 2008 Are they fat?? Best to split and repair in 2 weeks. i would ask the same,, and would agree in seperating them for a while [youll be quicker in the end] keep the fat off them , plenty shavings, tobacco stalks when re-pairing them , give them a little hemp seed each day untill pairing and good luck
Guest karl adams Posted February 1, 2008 Report Posted February 1, 2008 i would give them some wheat germ oil on there feed to
Guest speckled Posted February 1, 2008 Report Posted February 1, 2008 agree spit put the hens & the cocks on strick diet, put the wheat germ oil on the coen tootazly agree karl, nothing like getting the hens hormones unstuck lol in other words be patient, give then plenty baths. start again never, no" cupids "arrow will srtric,k come valentines day whan ya repair. Speck ;D
Guest j v ward Posted February 1, 2008 Report Posted February 1, 2008 if you think thy are to fat put cider viniger in there water for 2 weeks it burns off internal fat
paul l Posted February 2, 2008 Author Report Posted February 2, 2008 thanks all will take all on board and let u now how it goes
Guest shadow Posted February 2, 2008 Report Posted February 2, 2008 got to agree with the other forum members the hens are overweight split them up and increase the barley and feed no more than one and a half onces per day
paul l Posted February 4, 2008 Author Report Posted February 4, 2008 went out today and i got 4 eggs must be a birthday presents
Guest slugmonkey Posted February 4, 2008 Report Posted February 4, 2008 I got fat hens and eggs everywhere I dont put birds together till feb 14th but all my racing lofts have birds down on eggs already we have had a lot of cold and snow so its kinda suprising that they are laying already I LIKE fat hen's this time of year I think the hens stay in better shape if they are carrying a little weight going into breeding season the babys are raised nicer if the hens are a little heavy ! they feed better I don't know why you arent getting eggs yet but I dont belive that its because the hens are fat ! I think it may be too early but what ever the reason I wouldnt cut the feed when I am trying to breed this sounds like an invitation to disaster to me, this is the most important time to make sure they are properly nourished !!! I have had everybody on probiotics and loads of vit and mineral supplements for the last 3 weeks I have 4 kinds of grit down now and also have been using peanut oil, brewers yeast, baby milk powder, and trying a few other things as well I cannot imagine cutting back on feed or giving barley now !!!

Guest slugmonkey Posted February 4, 2008 Report Posted February 4, 2008 Like fat healthy babys ? I guess this is what makes pigeon racing one guy says fat one says skinny LOL one says feed the other says starve
billy wilson Posted February 4, 2008 Report Posted February 4, 2008 i bought a hen off rex doe for stock years ago from his old dark breed, this hen was always massive when come to pair her up and guess what she was always the first hen to lay every year,i think if the hen is ready to pair and she,s straight down for the cock, then they should lay alright mine have been paired at home 6 pairs, and i think they will go down over the next three days they are also prisoners.forgot to say paired them up last sunday billy
