Guest karl adams Posted February 20, 2008 Report Posted February 20, 2008 am i to take it that no one uses these as a tonic
Tony C Posted February 20, 2008 Report Posted February 20, 2008 I've never used this combo. Whats it for? at a guess I'd say it wouldn't hurt giving it to darkness y/birds going through the moult during a cold damp spell.
Guest TAMMY_1 Posted February 20, 2008 Report Posted February 20, 2008 am i to take it that no one uses these as a tonic Looks that way at the moment
Guest karl adams Posted February 20, 2008 Report Posted February 20, 2008 maybe that people would sooner buy from a shop and pay silly money for it
Fair Play Posted February 20, 2008 Report Posted February 20, 2008 Not too sure about the lemon it might tend to scour your birds - only a thought
Guest slugmonkey Posted February 20, 2008 Report Posted February 20, 2008 I have used vinegar and honey but not with garlic I like it by its self
Guest IB Posted February 20, 2008 Report Posted February 20, 2008 Much the same as the last post: on race days my birds home to cider vinegar and honey in the drinking water. That is changed early evening to garlic on its own. I know that garlic & honey preparations are sold for giving on race days, haven't tried the home made sort because I don't know if the honey would dissolve in it in the drinker. Only other thing I am looking at just now is garlic and wormwood as a wormer. Have picked up that worms are known to be resistant to ivermectin & levamisole, I've been told to treat my birds again with levamisole in 2 weeks time for hairworm, but I'm going herbal instead. If I could get Tansy I'd be putting that in too.
Guest slugmonkey Posted February 20, 2008 Report Posted February 20, 2008 I belive wormwood is very strong in some applications and maybe toxic ???
THE PRIEST Posted February 20, 2008 Report Posted February 20, 2008 dose any one mix garlic hony and lemon juice for a tonic if so how is it mixed and what is it for thanks Yes me one full bulb of garlic crushed in a 2 gallon bucket of water with two tablespoons of honey (mixed into a cup of luke warm water first) and two tablespoons of lemon juice. All are left overnight. I use it on a sunday the garlic is supposed to clear the birds out and the honey and lemon juice is used in almost every cold remedy available. Just started useing this in the last six months and i also use apple cider vinigar on a monday.
Guest Posted February 20, 2008 Report Posted February 20, 2008 Not too sure about the lemon it might tend to scour your birds - only a thought Lemon juice is comonly used over the corn along with brewers yeast just prior to a show,it livens the birds up,produces that "sparkle" in the pen. I know lemon and honey are often used together as a natural pick me up after a race by some fanciers and garlic certainly never did any harm, the benefits of garlic are endless [look up past threads on here],so that combination sounds like a good tonic to me

Garlic can be used as a natural wormer [my friend uses it on her dog as it has a serious reaction to chemical wormers].When you worm your pigeons using "chemical" wormers it is important to rotate your type of wormer to avoid resistance, all wormers fall into a drug based group [think there are 3] and you should use 1 out of each group a) to avoid resistance and to ensure ALL types of worms are treated for.
Fair Play Posted February 20, 2008 Report Posted February 20, 2008 I have no problem with garlic or honey - I use one from Holland & Barrett and the birds are fine. Maybe the honey will remove some of the acidity from the lemon. On a lighter note if the birds liven up after the lemon maybe they are looking for the "Loo" the most innocuous of things can cause problems, but like all things "everything in moderation"
