After this time,  a dud egg will sink, if immersed in water. A good egg will  float. ;)

No 2. Any hen will lay 4 eggs within a few weeks, "at seperate times of paring" ;)

Yep Vic... like when a lad, and bird egging was lega, all eggs collected were blown into seperate cups after the water test and fried. Moorhen's eggs, for instance, are by far the most delicous eggs ever.

I've noticed the egg appears darker and heavier when there is a developing youngster in it - though not always - one or two I'd thought to be a 'dud' have hatched. (Never thought to check if the youngster turned out a 'dud'.)

My only experience of 4 eggs in a nest has always been from paired hens. I've never heard of 2 hens paired to the same cock going to the same nest in the same box before, I'd have thought it would lead to fighting between the hens and the cock would turn one of the hens away?

If you haven't had two hens paired to the one cock in the same box, you still have a little bit more to learn, it's the hens that fall out at the end of the cyclce, the cock will never clear a harem. ;D
