Am considering taking on a rescue greyhound and would be interested to know if anyone on here has any experience of rehabilitated racing greyhounds?

They make great pets apparently and over 20,000 of them every year find themselves in rescue thrown away by the racing industry, they are the lucky ones, many more are just put down before they even reach 3 years old.

Well after reading this article  it looks a lot worse than what you have said Chrissy.

Greyhound Racing...

It has been estimated that every year (in Britain & Ireland) as many as 30,000 greyhounds are bred for racing, while a similar number end their racing lives or are rejected by the industry as unsuitable through temperament or injury!

Many racing rejects are likely to end their days in a horrible way - drowned, poisoned, beaten to death, starved, dumped on the streets, impounded or killed by their owners.

Greyhound puppies are often killed if they fail to reach racing standard. At least one third of greyhound puppies are thought to be killed before they reach a year old!

Many are also exported abroad for hunting, racing or coursing. They live in appalling conditions – locked up for 23 hours per day, then eventually disposed of by hanging or other horrific methods. Most owners will not pay for a vet to do the job.

The lives of many racing dogs end after 2 years. They could live to at least 14 years.

Many owners & trainers are not prepared to pay the expenses involved in allowing the dogs to live out their lives in decent accommodation. Some are not even willing to pay the cost of having a dog humanely put to sleep by a vet. Too many kennels keep the retired dogs in appalling conditions and without even basic veterinary care to relieve suffering.

There is no way that appropriate responsible homes - or even satisfactory kennel places - could ever be found for so many thousands of greyhounds every year.

There is already a massive dog overpopulation problem in this country caused by irresponsible breeding and a total lack of commitment by any government to a sensible neutering programme. Greyhound racing inevitably leads to the killing and suffering of thousands of unwanted dogs as has recently been revealed in the media. The number of greyhounds currently being rehomed into appropriate caring and permanent homes represents just a tiny minority of ex racing dogs.

The placement of dogs into homes, without taking the time and trouble to do thorough assessments and correctly matching the dog to the home could appear to markedly increase the number of dogs being rehomed. However, in such cases these same dogs are likely to be returned into rescue - or simply abandoned - within a short space of time.

that might of been a case for the past its very difficult to put a dog down today for no reason. i have raced them for the last 7 years my 1st one is at home with me now. the other 4 i have rehomed myself. i never get another dog until i have rehomed the one i have, i have always done my best by them. the rga make more of a effort to rehome greys now. you quote 20,000 thrown into resue homes how many other breeds of dogs get put up for rehoming in the uk through shelters rspca ect bet its more than 20,000 greyhounds,

Well this guy had no problem putting them down.

Man from Seaham, Co. Durham who killed 10,000 healthy greyhounds over a 15 year period

According to the Sunday Times David Smith, builders' merchant from Seaham in Co. Durham took healthy greyhounds no longer considered by their owners and trainers to be fast enough to race and kills them. David Smith having walked them into a building , kills them with a bolt gun (which doesn't need a firearms licence) then wheels the bodies out in a wheelbarrow to bury them using a mechanical digger in his one acre plot at the back of his home. During the past 15 years it is believed he has killed more than 10,000 healthy greyhounds.

tammy,

they are as good as any other dog they only need a short walk or a short run around the park. people always go on about how many get rehomed like i said in a previous post a vet will not put a healthy dog down for no good reason. its like any sport you can good and bad in each. how many racing  pigeons in the uk get culled between the start and finish of the racing  season.? food for thought.

Thanks everyone for your positive coments and advice :)

I have registered with greyhound rescue west of England who are entirely funded by donations from the public [not the racing industry]

Am viewing dogs they have in kennels at Nantwich and Stoke on Trent in the morning [am so excited ;D]

It''s just the first preliminary visit so I won't be coming home with a dog straight away, got to find the right one for me and I have to be the right one for the dog too of course!

I am glad that through the forum I and others have been able to highlight the plight of these dogs.

Thanks to Tammy for putting the links and info on for me as I still can't copy and paste? [you know what I mean ;D]. :)
