Guest scoobybob Posted March 9, 2008 Report Posted March 9, 2008 Two weeks ago I order a shed (6’ X 8’) just to keep the lawn mower, spade and odds and ends in. My son asked if I would rather keep pigeons in the shed. He had heard I kept Pigeons when I was a youngster some 50 yrs ago. The misses said great idea it will also give you something to do now you are retired. (I retired early I’m still a spring chicken really) So I ordered another shed, well workshop at 8’ X 10’ which I will convert to a pigeon loft. When a youngster I started with Fantails then moved on to tumblers and tipplers. I always loved to watch the birds fly and could watch the tipplers flying, from my class in school. (No wonder I was so thick,) I then moved on to racing pigeons and joined the Royal Nation Homing Union think it was called something like this. Where I could purchase rings for the youngsters. I joined the local pigeon club and trained my first year’s youngsters to about 45 miles. I was lucky as my dad had a car not many cars on the road in them days. Time came for there first race as I was only about 13 and I could not afford a clock, it was only training for my birds but my birds where going off with the big boys. It was then I found out the colours for tipplers are not called the same for racing pigeons. I had marked down one bird as a grizzel. The old geezer who was putting on the rubber rings really ripped into me. Telling me I could not use pet names to send birds off. I did try to explain I had come from tipplers and this was a colour for a tippler which I thought would be the same for a racing pigeon. But no the old geezer was having none of it and ripped into me all through the day. That was as far as I went with racing pigeons, I gave all my racers away and went back to Fancy pigeons. So at the moment I do not really know what type of pigeons I will keep. I do not think I will want to race the birds yet but just keep them for a hobby. You never know when I get to a club and have a chat I may change my mind. I am still trying to find out if there are any Racing pigeon clubs in my area. (Withywood, Bristol.) Same goes for Tippler or Tumbler clubs.

doo Posted March 10, 2008 Report Posted March 10, 2008 Welcome Scoobybob, we are starting up again too but only after 5 years out the sport. You can join the RPRA & get rings if you are thinking of keeping a few racers. The RPRA will also tell you your nearest club in your area. Or if it's fancy birds some members on here will be able to help you, on this site is a thread for Fancy pigeons maybe worth a wee look, What ever you do we wish you the best of luck.

Castleview Posted March 10, 2008 Report Posted March 10, 2008 I think everyone gets the stuff ripped out of them as soon as they make a mistake down the club. I did when I started out, but I opened my mouth and upset the fanciers that were ripping into me. They never spoke to me again, so I was happy and I enjoyed my racing. Some clubs are good communities, others a full of people that rip you and they don't make you feel welcome because your the 'new guy' especially if you begin winning every week.
