If you're a new starter, what were the first questions that came to mind? Equally if your not just starting, what were your first questions and queries?

Motive of my post is to produce the answers of these questions in a re-jigged novices section to the website. So post up the first thing that flummoxed you, 1) we'll try and answer it if it hasn't been already, and 2) it'll go towards creating this new section to help others :)

1/ What clubs do I need to belong to? How much for membership?

2/Who will supply the rings for the young?

3/Do I have to have a clock or can I just send the birds of for training?

4/I hear a lot about a new way of timing birds in. ETS is it? As a newbe would it be best to purchase this system or a clock? In say a 12 month or a few years we could have most using the ETS System if a clock was purchased first might be a bit of a waste of money.

5/ Is it best to order corn in bulk,  what corn, where?

6/ What grits and minerals?

7/ Can the birds drink the water from our taps or should this be filtered? Is anything added to the tapwater or filtered water?

8/ I hear a lot about cocks and hens and young being separated. Is this a must, or can they all share the same loft together?

Aye but one very little will heed, human nature or modern culture endlessly get things that they know nothing about or can cope with because they have not done any homework. :-/

what type and how much food to give the birds.

Coey !!!!!!, I don't think it matters all that much really (I could be wrong), as long as the food is top quality, along with the birds, "You can win". Just remember thou "Fat pigeons arn't fit pigeons"  ;) ;) ;) & if you learn the difference, between a tennis ball & a cricket ball etc, your well on the way to being a winner.

Enjoy.

THIS IS A GREAT SITE FOR NOVICES LIKE MYSELF BUT I THINK US NOVICES SHOULD BE TOLD ABOUT SOME OF THE BAD THINGS THAT MIGHT HAPPEN TO OUR BIRDS AS WELL AS THE GOOD THINGS THAT WILL HAPPEN, JUST SO WE KNOW WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN THE BAD DOES HAPPEN, AND IT ALREADY AS LOADS OF TIMES, I DIDNT THINK KEEPING A FEW BIRDS WOULD BE SO STRESSFUL  ;):o :'( ;D

Sh*t happens at times. Just like life in general as  :( as it is, I'm afraid. Just to give you a little bit of enjoyment ????? to worry about in the future, with your birds. He's a few of mine from the past !!!!!! Cats, Foxes, Hawks, Snakes, Rats, Dogs & Humans etc. All have paid my loft a visit at different times over the years, to cause utter bedlam & misery for me  :'( :'( :'(. I'm quite sure many others here  :X :X :X, can offer you their wisdom etc, seeing as you wish to know the truth, the whole truth & nothing but the truth so to speak. "Re pigeon racing".

oops sorry about the caps, just thought it might be an idea to discuss some of the pitfalls so people know what their getting in to, not to put people off just to make them more aware and im not into racing (yet) rollers are my birds, or is it my birds are rollers :B racing must be more stressful than keeping a few birds to fly round the house :o :o :o

As Lennut Tar says sh*t happens and as someone else said for every action there is a reaction, Its how we react to these setbacks that makes us or breaks us. Don’t dwell on them, use what you have been left with to your advantage. If it doesn’t work out you’ll still have gained from the experience and experience is the greatest teacher there is.

An apt quote being as today’s St. Patricks Day

"Our greatest glory is not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall." Oliver Goldsmith

Saying that there’s more ups than downs in this game, if that wasn’t the case we’d all end up in a lunatic asylum.

What about Tammy and Dovescot as residents "Old Hands" on this site to answer questions for novices etc, they have a good deal of common sense, and apparent knowledge, and the most frustrating to any genuine question is to have an amount of answers availble, especially for those in need quick soloutions.

Thank you for your kind words but as much as me and Tammy genuinely try to help any member or in fact anyone, there is a few that might think you would be putting the lunatics in charge of the asylum.

Like life's ups and downs, I have ups and downs with members on the site but the ups still vastly outweigh the downs :) :) :)
