Ben re: the 4 yo; I remember when I was your age being told that it is not unusual to lose an experienced pigeon (like yours) on very short tosses. Wasn't given a reason for it.

I do not believe the weather recently has been suitable for training. Remember if its a dirty day, hawks may be grounded too. First decent day after the weather breaks folk are away down the road with the basket, and the hawks are down the road too, waiting on them.

Think nowadays if I'd a particularly bad toss, I'd miss a day and then take them back to the same point; if they have taken all day to come 13 miles, nothing to be gained taking them down the road again next day.

Ben your training to early in poor weather IB is talking sense leave your birds let them settle the forecast is poor till next week .Pick some decent days a toss in batches of 5 15 mins apart dont be in such a rush you will ruin your birds for the season carrying on like this. The likes of Dick Antony and the other distances boys down home havent started yet be patient talk to the likes of Dick listen and learn

ears and eyes open and mouth shut unless your asking questions i did this after doing exactly as you have done you only learn by your mistakes and learning to do it better .

you havbe answered your own question if they are turning up with strange pigeons they are clashing or picking up other birds out training, yes the sun is out but the wind is still cold and you could do more harm than good

How well are the birds flying around home a lot of people seem to look at training as a quick fix but its not the birds must be fittish before you start training. I let mine out during the winter once a week to fly as they wish so they don't get too stiff. Then I started letting them out early this year until they were flying a hour. Only then did I take them training picking my days very carefully.

So far they have had 5 15 mile chucks and 3 25 mile chucks. On one of the 25 mile chucks they were trown in batchs of three to race each other back with 10 minute intervals between batches.

My birds are all yearlings as its my first season with OB's and I haven't dropped a bird yet. One came back a hour late but I worked out that was my fault as I had took her for a chuck just a day after dropping her second egg so I rested her for a few days and then took her on a 25 miler this morning and she came good.

My dad was a good pigeon flier and he's keeping me right with their preparation. Handling them every night and checking if the feeding and exercise is right.

My pigeons are on the natural system and are currently sitting eggs. One or two of the lads have had bad tosses on the same day I took mine but mine are alright so I can only put this down to my preparation has been slow and steady without the last minute rush of just oh no the birds aren't fit so lets basket them or we'll loose the first crappy 80 mile sprint race.

We only really have a sparrowhawk problem up here so can't comment on other types of hawk attacks. I hope you get your birds back Ben.

I wouldn't have thought other birds out training would have brothered well moviated pigeons but mine have eggs to race home to so they are focused. Is it common for widowhood birds to get mixed in with groups of hens training and follow them?

hi was it windy .

hawk strike for me but some times they do hit wires as they are so low to the ground.

seen them hit walls and the wire on top of them not good . :(

That can be a problem as well when they are fit they tend to skim things flying back like an raf fighter pilot so birds at back may not have seen an obstacle so hit it. I wouldn't expect this to cause the rest of the birds to be a hour late through.

Blackjack is right as well its a long season so just be patient I've got two teams. I team inland pigeons cocks and hens 18 in total and 1 team for the chanel consisting of 9 hens in total the channel team have only had half the tosses for the inland and if either of the teams weren't fit I'd rather miss a few races than take them training

Ben:   I had the same thing happen to me Sunday!   Had 9- late hatches down there couple of times last summer and fall.  Had one bird untrained with them.  Had 2-birds 1-hr 20min. then they staggered home!!  Still out 2-cocks trained to 50 mile.  No trained came home in 2-days.  Weather was beautiful!!!   Don't know a thing sometimes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  PS  no solar activity to affect the magnetic field..             jimbobboy  USA
