Hi guys i have just got back from shopping and some1 has been in my garden(my own fault i know) i forgot to lock my gate and they have opened up my cage front and all my new birds have flown loft not been here long enough to know this is home and i cant see them flying around my area is there any chance they may come home

If not does any1 in manchester area breed rollers or tumblers as i am going to have to start out all over again from scratch this is devastating for me and my son's since keeping bird we have had 2 hawk attacks and now some little A HOLE has been in and deliberatly let our birds out

they may return, just keep an eye out for them!

Did they come from a local loft to which they may have returned?

Hope you get them back and buy a padlock.

Never mind preventives etc. the Horse has bolted, so to answer your question, YES some will definately come back to you. Getting them in may take a bit of time though. Light seed to keep them around ne the traps. Not too mucch though as you want them to eventually see through the traps their feed. Personally I would leave the door open and let them walk in and out. This enables them to get confidence and enter. ANY and every birds is, and can only be broken, or settle when they know they can come and go. ... Plus the fact they like the set up and want to stay. So chin up mucker, all can well turn out well, ndeed a blessing as 'It's an ill wind tht blows no good'!

If all of the birds have returned to their former home, then its just a matter of collecting them, and starting again. If some are still missing and you have birds already settled to your loft, let these out and keep them out for as long as possible, chances are they'll drop the others if they are hanging about locally..

Maybe ask forum members for advice on settling these birds. What age are they?

2 of them have returned to former home the rest are hanging around i dont have any settled here i am hoping that they will get hungry and return they are on roofs around when it goes dark i will use my ladder and bob upto roof see what i can catch going to get the 2 that returned 2moro and the chap has said if i dont get these back he will brred me some more and these will be coming to me fresh from nest having never flown out from his place so my loft will defanatly be home

I wouldn't frightened them at all ... they are near, so be patient and wait. Leave the door open with a sprinkling of small seed... don't try and catch them ... let them gain confidence, and become even hungrier. They will shift from loft to loft ... better they feed in your loft!

Indeed the most sensible way of breaking in any bird is to feed  - when possible and circumstances permit - in their new home only, Soon they will fly to their new home for feed and water, and soon Robert's your mothers brother! Patience is a virtue, use it!

hi guys all the birds are acounted for 3 returned to there original home which i am going to collect 2moro and the rest came into my loft so i am happy as a pig in S**T

well done, try and keep the ones that returned to you going out but keep the food tight until you know they are safe and you can get them in when you want to and then when the others are sitting let them out with them 1 at a time. The main bunch should hold the others.

Cheers phil was real chuffed the 1's that came in last nite i let out 2 day and they picked up the final 2 of them and they all came in fine i used to leave loft open for birds to come in and out when they wanted when i had rollers before i found it ok but when i got racers i had them on routine till the hawk strike so i will be waiting for all to go down on eggs and in to a regular feed routine small feed in morning about 6am and then about 7pm usually would let them out about an hour before feed time and hopefully i shouldn't go wrong with that

i am sorted now my birds were all new to loft they only came 10/06/08 and 12/06/08 and on 14/06/08 some idiot let them out i was lucky this time managed to get them all in and hawk not here anymore so that a blessing or it would have had them

keep them on a routine, open lofts attract hawks as they get to know where to get an easy feed.

Phil

ok phil will keep them on a feed routine will start it today and keep this going and after a fortnight i shall start letting them out 1 at a time and also by then hopefully they will be down on eggs aswell

Well, must say well done and that I am pleased for you.

First birds I had were old birds. I had on the 28th March. First race 10th of April that year ... I asked the fancier I had them from to leave his loft up as I had been told via a very good and knowledgeable  flyer that regardless how many time you collect no longer than 3 days in the loft till let out to break.  I raced every race North and most South with broken birds. Indeed out of the 24 I had I still had 19 at seasons end... Natural flown of course. Best was a 3rd from Frazerburgh with a blue cock bird. This was tossed Grantham day before basketing, sitting eggs about to hatch. It went back to it's old loft. I picked it up on the next morning, light fed it and let it sit it's eggs till I took it to tehe club.. removed the hen. Most said I was daft, but I knew it was going to do well.
