Guest Vic Posted July 1, 2008 Report Posted July 1, 2008 About 15 years ago, a Scottish pigeon , that had class written all over it dropped late, one night at my place. I released it early next morning, perhaps it could have gone earlier.Five instead of six, maybe. The next year he arrived again, but I dispatched him at first light this time, placing a small note wthin his ring. The owner replied, thanking me, for for my efforts, adding that the bird had won a few bob from Rennes, as there were none on the day and few and far betwen second day. Now my point is this:- I could have delivered this pigeon to this mans front door, (travellng through the night) only had a bike at the time. ha! ha!, and he could have won the Gold Cup. SO WATCH IT! WHEREEVER YOU ARE. INSTANT VERIFICATION IS EVERYTHING THESE DAYS.
mealybar Posted July 2, 2008 Report Posted July 2, 2008 How would early verification make any difference in this case Vic?
pjc Posted July 2, 2008 Report Posted July 2, 2008 the owner could have driven 1/2 way, met you and clocked the bird in there and then! If the bird had been verified the following morning it would have been back in its own loft so I don't see your point Vic! I have verified birds for the National and CSCFC but could only verify where the birds were at the time of my visits, who knows where they've been for the previous 24hrs or so. Phil
Whats it called Cumbernauld Posted July 2, 2008 Report Posted July 2, 2008 Phil, Take it that verification entails letitng the bird out, to make sure it is at home. If our organisations make competitors aware that verificatin takes place, then this should help some to resist temptaion. The Cash rewards and Prestaige assosiated with these big races would seem to be just to much for some. We should, and must make it clear that not just the winner but a random number of pigeons even down the result will be verified. Yeah Rab Smith
Guest IB Posted July 2, 2008 Report Posted July 2, 2008 I do not think that the case Vic highlighted could be rumbled by current verification practices. At the end of the day its down to honesty, both to yourself and others. For me there could never be any satisfaction in having my race bird credited with a performance that neither I nor the bird had achieved. There would be no point in me keeping pigeons if I did.
pjc Posted July 2, 2008 Report Posted July 2, 2008 As IB says its down to honesty, verification is checking ring number, wing mark etc and liberating the bird at its home loft and watching it re-enter the loft. But there is nothing to say the bird hasn't been collected from another location 100miles away over night etc. How many birds have 2 homes? I have heard of many birds stopping of at regular lofts enroute for a rest and then heading for home. If a bird was doing this regularly the owner could actualy wait at the stop off point for the bird, clock it and drive home with the bird which could then be verified at the home end! Makes you think! Phil

Bluedoo Posted July 2, 2008 Report Posted July 2, 2008 Well now you have confirmed why Scottish pigeons do not carry phone numbers on wings or rings.
Guest Vic Posted July 2, 2008 Report Posted July 2, 2008 You do have a yb National, were stamping is allowed. Don't You?
Roland Posted July 2, 2008 Report Posted July 2, 2008 the owner could have driven 1/2 way, met you and clocked the bird in there and then! Phil This actually happened, Mormanton being the appropiate meeting place... Later the person who's loft it dropped in, - He couldn't stopping spouting how he had helped a bird to win big time - spouted a bit too much. THERE WAS AND INQUIRY and the bird disqualied.
jimmy white Posted July 2, 2008 Report Posted July 2, 2008 You do have a yb National, were stamping is allowed. Don't You? yes, but not old birds , reason obvious,, but as" i b" says ,, on his last paragraph on his post , says it all
Guest Vic Posted July 2, 2008 Report Posted July 2, 2008 "No point in keeping pigeons," you mean, Jim? NO! it's been going on since racing began, and with all modern accessories it will get even worse. Where there's money there's MUCK. Ask most of the jocks will agree with me, for once. Under the carpet! Surely not, this time?
jimmy white Posted July 2, 2008 Report Posted July 2, 2008 i agree with you vic,",where theres money theres muck"but beleive this is very far and few between ,, pigeon fanciers are not daft and would soon cotton on [and do],,,but i do agree with you,,, , but most are dedicated pigeon men are honest ,and would see nothing in not genuinly winning ,,,,,,,,,,but money, the route of all evil, is certainly a true saying
jimmy white Posted July 2, 2008 Report Posted July 2, 2008 in the old days [when i was a boy ;D ;D, dont answer that ;D] we had to send a telegraph as soon as we timed in from the nationals
Guest Vic Posted July 2, 2008 Report Posted July 2, 2008 Nice to have a wee banter, whilst on the decanter. lol. But also nice, very, very nice to see one of you Jocks, with one pigeon entered, scoop the bulk of the pools. Over two grand. Well done to you mate!
Guest Vic Posted July 3, 2008 Report Posted July 3, 2008 who are you talking about ;D ;D ;D?A guy by the name of Johnston from Ormiston. 24th open, and picks up £2,500 sending ONE bird. BRILLIANT. p.s Ogilvi is another Good'n dont you think?
Guest IB Posted July 3, 2008 Report Posted July 3, 2008 You do have a yb National, were stamping is allowed. Don't You? Think you picked it up wrong. In Scotland, all YBs have to be wing stamped before they can compete in a race. But SNFC YB National its not allowed, so you have to obliterate the wing stamp. Said to be to stop race birds being reported during the race period?

If, there is any cheats, look for the short flyers, with northern clocks. Same down our way, and all over the country. Maybe less than 1%. BUT, it's going on. Instant verification is a MUST where money is concerned
Whats it called Cumbernauld Posted July 4, 2008 Report Posted July 4, 2008 Vic your not alwas right, but you are this time mate Happy days Rab
