was just thinking what if the experniced fanicers here took on a newbie or a fanicer having trouble getting a win or 2 under there wing and gave them advice like a one on one through pm imagine the craic would be good and fanicers that have lost there way  or thinking of giveing up might give them a bit of hope

i think the banter between the "experienced" fanciers would be enough to put any newcomer off even though it would be said in jest, but a good idea not to sure about the competition side of it ...pete[hope this is clear ive just read it and it sounds confusing lol]

in theory i think its a great idea ,as you know theres some lighthearted banter between fanciers ,i think this could upset new starters even tho its not meant to if for  example you have a newbie/novice to mentor and X has a newbie /novice, your doing better with your charge than he is and the opportunity for the p*ss taking could arise ,this i think could be off putting jmho ...pete

Its a very good idea Just ask Me,pigeon racing is possibily the unfairest competion in the World to day, with a newbie, from the word go competing against in most cases lifelong fanciers, even at club level,a novice against old pros, with no quarter given, and when often asking for advice, hesitantly in lots of cases on here, they often end up more bewildered with the different array of answers given (with good intentions) than before they asked, but the onus is on the Newbie to ask,I would have no problems with this. j.m.o.

this is why, in my view in small clubs, good flyers should restrain themselves when it comes to clocking. when i started the top flyer restrained himself and those 5th/6th cards i picked up helped me . i knew they'd been given...but somehow it gave me that little bit of encouragement. i respect a fancier far more if he takes first 2 in our club than if he takes 3 or more . very often those guys are quite happy to take 3 on a good day , but on nights when their behind they'll say 'just take the 1st one'.

Maybe we should have a list of members prepared to mentor and in which area they live and what birds they keep, i.e racers, tumblers etc.

Then any newbies if required could be mentored by somebody local as its not always possible to give all advice by pm and a visit would sort out a problem. Also a newbie could visit an experienced fanciers loft to see what goes on, even maybe before they've gone out and got birds etc.

touble with letting newbies gain cards if ur birds were in b4 them will give them cards they didnt deserve(although it sounds harsh)they have to learn that cards dont come easy and the older heads in their clubs have worked hard to get where they are!

i for one would hate it (if i were a newbie to the sport) having cards i didnt deserve and the other flyers had birds in b4 me.

this is all about education of the sport..this should give them drive to get better and not just except cards come cheaply.

when i started 10yrs ago i would look up to who the winners were and how they got their birds to win.

i set about rules id stick too in my 1st few years..and started taking 5th and 6th cards in the club.

then i threw the rule book out of the window and did it my way, i started to take better cards and eventually my 1st win.

then i took more wins and eventually became the averages winner..and continued to do so till i packed in 2yrs ago.

well u know wot they say when it hooks u in..well i returned after wot i call was a forced departure from the sport.

in only my 2nd race back i won.

i give advice to anyone who requires help, im not saying i know it all but the little knowledge i have comes free with just a question from a newbie.

and i try to give it as it is, so they will be under no immpression of its easy ti win.

hard work and more hard work, i also tell them u will be kicked in the teeth more times then u will have a pat on the back in racing.

i let them know there will be some at times who will want to make u feel small but take most of it with a pinch of salt and make them eat their words by beating them.

u can only give so much to a newbie but if he/she aint gonna listen then u have to let them learn the hard way.

remember the saying...sometimes u have to cruel to be kind.

i wish i had someone give it to me straight when i started and not covered me in(cotton wool)so to speak.

i know this may sound hard on a newbie but they will benefit more then making them feel racing is easy, if u want just to have fun then its fine...but if u want it to be serious about racing  then uve got to dig in and do some hard work.

i consider myself in between serious and fun at the moment...because of health probs, so any help i can give to any newbie just pm and if i can help in any way then its free  ask anything.

i have to agree with you on this one i think the advice would be great but i think i would find if i was allowed to win a card when i /the bird didnt deserve it a little patronising and it would take the sense of achievment out of your first card ...pete

hi pete m8, it may have sounded hard but it wasnt meant to put off novices but to make them understand it can be hard.

on the other hand it can be a whole new world of fun for them.

(by the way) ru a blue or red???..lol

RED mate no it wasnt hard as i said if i win anything next year i rather it was because of something i had done right or the birds themselves as opposed to tom ,dick and harry not clocking so i got a card ......pete

Yes it was hard when most of us started out but can we afford to be as hard on newcomers with the sport dying on its feet as it is. Do we have to say 'if you want to play this game you've got to be made of the right stuff?’ times are a changing and I think attitudes should follow suit. Pigeon racing is nowadays in competition with many other sports which wasn't available to ordinary folk years ago, once they join our ranks we should give them every bit of help and encouragement we can and hope we hold onto them.

being hard doesnt mean being mean, tell them the truth and they will benefit from it, they will listen to u more .

maybe in my post i seemed a little harder then it was meant to come out as, but i give 100% to any newbie .

ive helped out one certain member who was starting up ,even delivered the birds for him ...70ml round trip, gave him advice, only hope he took it on board, that was last year..but seems he did as he now is scoring. and good luck to him too.

as i said i dont pretend to be a top fancier but knowledge is priceless.

some might just be doing that  ;)

agree,,  ;D

in my opinion, we should all be doing our own bit on the quiet ,,,,,,,for them ,,not us,,allthough most would help advise any new members,,, we should also be trying to GET them  :)
