Why are so many of us getting ripped off, by inferior vetinerary practitioners? Why don't we have an avian vet , somebody that understands pigeons, and all  species of birds. Seems to me, that most vets haven't got a clue, where pigeons are concerned, and treat them along with their owners like  flying rats. Surely there must be a PROPER  avian vet out there, somewhere, that the pigeon fraternity, could and would, hail as our saviour.  With perhaps, a percentage of the profits from Blackpool  giving it a kickstart.

Tom Pennycote from the the college at auchincruive in ayrshire is the best i have come across in scotland for diagnosing the diseases in the pigeons he is not a vet ,its an

agriculturel college i think he is at, but i would recommend him to cover all aspects of the

pigeons ailments , and other birds as well first class

A much to sensible a suggestion Vic for the RPRA to comprehend. I would say the sport lose more fanciers to the seemingly endless bombardment of modern day illnesses our pigeons are encountering than to anything else. Much easier for the RPRA to bury its head in the sand BUT this one aint gonna go away!

I'd floated an idea up here amongst some club mates that our Fed should retain a local well respected avian vet, add a bit to subscriptions to cover it which would include an annual health check on all members lofts. Reaction was that members wouldn't want it if it meant increased subscriptions.

Agree,don't waste your money going to see an ordinary vet,total waste of time,most of them haven't even heard of canker!.I went to an avian vet once,it was about 50 miles away so cost me alot of time and petrol and all they wanted to do was charge me £20 for walking through the door and run a load of tests for things I knew it hadn't got like canker and worms.[they had been routinely done for both prior topairing up less than 6 weeks earlier}

Best thing you can do is learn yourself,read books,get a microscope [and learn to use it properly],listen and learn from experienced fanciers,be ever vigilent in your loft for the first sign of trouble,then isolate imediately

Introduce a basic medication programme if nothing else ie worms,canker etc [anyone who thinks you don't need one is dreaming]

Above all keep a clean loft :)

There is an Avian Vet out there mate though he lives over here  ;)   I first went to him a few years ago with two Game Cocks and had a very interesting chat with him for a couple of hours while he determined what was wrong with the birds..I have recommended him to many fanciers and the majority have found his service excellent..there are those who didnt but then they have used other vets and rubbished them to because they found nothing wrong with their birds...typical of some when doubting the vet instead of their own pigeons..

I will contact him tomorrow to see if its ok to post his name and contact details because some are funny about that  ;) ;)

My club have been discussing same. We're working along the lines of paying £1 a week throughout the racing season. Two screens will be done, one prior to oldbird racing the other prior to youngbirds.

Obviously a great idea, and should be accepted by all clubs. Why pay maybe, individually,hundreds of pounds out? to have them soiled up again by the ignoramuses that most clubs have , I'm afraid, these days.
