paul10121968 Posted November 15, 2008 Report Posted November 15, 2008 i gave my birds a lettuce today and they stripped it clean in about 10 mins,i do give multivitamins in water occasionally, but i thought it would be nice for them to have some naturally.they also like chicken pellets to and hemp seed.do you think im overdoing it?
tippler1 Posted November 15, 2008 Report Posted November 15, 2008 was told not to give lettuce as its like a drug to birds but dont know if thats true
paul10121968 Posted November 15, 2008 Author Report Posted November 15, 2008 no wonder they love it so much ;D ;D
Guest IB Posted November 15, 2008 Report Posted November 15, 2008 Basically finished my 1st whole year of using a 'greens' feeder, up to 3 days a week . Whole lettuce is staple ingredient, plus I have tried with it: shredded cabbage, kale (leaves) broccolli spears, spinach (leaves) oregano (leaves), cress and thyme (leaves). Oregano & thyme come in sprigs, but iI found sprigs end up in nest bowl. I strip leaves and sprinkle them over the lettuce. Down to one feeder a week now during winter, lettuce only.
ChrisMaidment08 Posted November 15, 2008 Report Posted November 15, 2008 boiled patato peelings they love with minerals on

Guest IB Posted November 15, 2008 Report Posted November 15, 2008 Hi IB. wondered what type of feeder you use as I would like to give my birds some greens. I have 4 of these. Multi-purpose. 2 grit etc, 1 greens, 1 spare (have used it for water) http://www.everythingforpets.com/emma_pigeon_feeder_drinker.pet/use.id.5.item_id.988.dept.144/
Guest redwhiteblue Posted November 15, 2008 Report Posted November 15, 2008 All greens are ok to give your birds with a little salt
DOVEScot Posted November 15, 2008 Report Posted November 15, 2008 Just put a lettuce in whole if you floor is reasonably clean and they will devour it, or get a hanging basket and suspend it just above the floor at pecking height
steve Posted November 16, 2008 Report Posted November 16, 2008 boiled patato peelings they love with minerals on what type of minerals chris??? black and red or a multivit type
ChrisMaidment08 Posted November 16, 2008 Report Posted November 16, 2008 red thats what i use birds never liked black so stoppped useing it when breeding i put chicken mash in as welll they eat it but it needs to be very dry mix
ChrisMaidment08 Posted November 16, 2008 Report Posted November 16, 2008 i also add little bit or rather cap full offlaxseed oil used to put vitinator yeast but dont now
DOVEScot Posted November 16, 2008 Report Posted November 16, 2008 red thats what i use birds never liked black so stoppped useing it when breeding i put chicken mash in as welll they eat it but it needs to be very dry mix Only problem with hen mash is it goes sour quick and dries like cement, but they love it in pellet form as well
ChrisMaidment08 Posted November 16, 2008 Report Posted November 16, 2008 i dont leave it down dove they eat thenit gets given to kids as porridge no waste here mate ;D ;D ;D ;D
the pigeon_milker Posted November 16, 2008 Report Posted November 16, 2008 sprouts are good they love em but i think it good to mix & match the greens just to keep it interesting for them
Guest IB Posted November 16, 2008 Report Posted November 16, 2008 Hi IB. wondered what type of feeder you use as I would like to give my birds some greens. Sorry, Freebird, mistake in my first reply to you. This the type of feeder I have. As you can see, it is very versatile http://www.everythingforpets.com/rebecca_pigeon_grit_mineral_feeder_with_compartments.pet/use.id.5.item_id.1287.dept.143/
Guest shadow Posted November 16, 2008 Report Posted November 16, 2008 used to hang a cabbage in the loft was advised not to use too much lettuce as can cause the droppings to become loose
