Brian Smith Posted November 24, 2008 Report Posted November 24, 2008 * Edit post * Report this post * Reply with quote Lol Whittle Postby briansmith on Mon Nov 24, 2008 5:16 pm I received a phone call this morning informing me of the passing of Lol Whittle of North Ashton, any one who knew Lol knew the respect in which he was held within our sport. Lol was a doer he had a go at most if not all jobs in pigeon racing, he was a convoyer, driver, auctioneer, scribe, but in these parts he will be remembered most of all for his prowess as a secretary, my first dealings with him was with the old North Ashton continental 3 bird in the early seventies, he was the secretary until the club disbanded in the late eighties, not wanting to see the north west with no top class 500 mile races he formed the present day North Ashton club in 1991 establishing this as the best 2 bird distance club in England. He took over the secretary job at Wigan 2 bird when the club was on it's uppers retiring from both job's in the last few years leaving both clubs with a very healthy balance sheet and a good member base. Anyone who remembers his writings in the B.H.W, will remember the down to earth easy to read way in which he wrote, this was Lol all over a very down to earth man who got on with the job in hand whilst others watched, as a secretary I have not seen better as racing man he held his own and in the bar he stood his corner. All this from a man who suffered ill health for a great number of years but still made a huge impact on our sport. To Vall and his family our greatest sympathy and condolences. Rest in peace mate. Bob & Brian Smith.
Guest Vic Posted November 24, 2008 Report Posted November 24, 2008 Sad, Indeed to hear the passing of Lol. I only met him on the odd occasions, but there was never a dull moment spent in his company. As regards 100% pigeon fanciers, he was out on his own. The late Jimmy Cosgrove (Old Swan) introduced us, all them years ago, and how could anyone ever sit with guys like this, without storing treasured memories. Goodnight Mate and GodBless, Vic.
Guest Gareth Rankin Posted November 24, 2008 Report Posted November 24, 2008 Was down at one of the North Ashton presentation nights in the late nineties as a guest alongside my Father and as always Lol had everything organised down to a tee, a great worker who was a professional at it at the same time who will be very much missed. RIP Lol

I only ever met Old Swan once, it was in a toilet of all places, in the Blackpool show, and it was Lol Whittle he was with and who introduced us. They were both well oiled, but the banter was brilliant. And thats what i'll always remember about Lol, along with his sincerity, that cheeky grin, and his cheesecutter cap, the crack he had was always brilliant. The last time I met up with him, he was auctioning the birds at the late great Dick Baldwin's bereavement sale. I was blessed in the fact that i knew him, and that I was lucky enough to have spent quite a few enjoyable hours in his company. My sincere condolences to his family. RIP LOL WHTTLE, ABSOLUTE GENTLEMAN OF THE SPORT. :'(
DeDarren Posted November 24, 2008 Report Posted November 24, 2008 Very sad news indeed, like many I remember the good he did for the sport in the North West area and I met him at the Smith Bros Entire Clearance sale a few year's back. What a gent, my condolenses to the Whittle family.
