another trick told me many years ago was put a pile of nest bowls in the middle of the floor in the widowhood cocks section, the bird that won the pile is your pooler!

Sorry mate. The secret is that the birds tell you when they are right. It is all about observation and knowing what makes individuals tick. For example I had one cock that won 9 firsts when I flew up here when I was at school/college before I went to Aberdeen. I had drop in traps and when he came in and didn't hit the floor and went straight up into his box he was unbeatable for 3 weeks. When he dropped in and landed on the floor he was as well staying at home. Another would not come in and would just keep sparking off the roof. I had a grizzle cock that when on form would drive and chase everything, I used to check the underside of his tail and when it was dirty and a bit scruffy he was bang on. A widowhood cock that Stevie will remember 3134 won the pools 5 weeks on the trot his party piece was to defend a basket ( with the widow hens in it ) in the section he wouldn't let anyone else on it, when he didnt defend it others would beat him. The list goes on but the real advice is know your birds, know what makes them tick. Get a chair, a beer or cup of coffee and sit and watch take notes as to what they are up to and review how they caome on race day and check back your notes.

Hope this helps,

Paul.

spot on m8, observations the key.Our club introduced a £10 pool for 3- birds .I won it 12 weeks out of 13, ( OVER 30 LOFTS IN CLUB ) just watching my birds. Not one pigeon won it twice. Needless to say, the pool was stopped the following year at the AGM  ;D  ;D

Is that joe because you dont know anything that would be helpful to anyone or because you dont like helping other people  :-/

You should know by now Rose, he's not capable of making a sensible contribution nor did his half wit son!

That is quite right Delboy. I used to have a diary and I would write it up every night from my scribblings and then read it over

prior to basketing. It was a great source of info for the following year also. Everything went in it, weather, temperatures, how they excercised, how they came from training, what they ate/ didnt eat, body condition, skin etc. The most important thing was always their behaviour in and around the loft. One hen in particular would not come off the nest when her eggs were due to hatch and she became fiercely protective. I stck an extra pot egg in every day for a week. in the end she could not cover them all properly and it made her really determined and did the trick. Like everything else it does not work all the time and they do catch onto tricks.

Joe, this is only a snippit we could all fill pages of this forum with things that we do. But at the end of the day the forum was set up to help people in particular novices and if I can help anyone in any way with my limited knowledge i will be happy. Achievement and the feel good factor come in many forms it costs nothing to be nice. The rewards for helping others are very personal and mean different things to different people. It is like the old saying ' if you cant do someone a good turn dont do them a bad one'
