joe61 Posted January 18, 2009 Report Posted January 18, 2009 If it is just a mark not wet, greasy, or a raised lump could it not be just making the mark some other way i.e. not sickness. I would rule out upper respiratory If the eyes are clear and the beak is closed tight. take a good look at the picture , the eyes are affected, in no way should a birds eyes look this inflamed or watery in appearence. spencer

pigeonscout Posted January 18, 2009 Report Posted January 18, 2009 any medication affects the immune system, if you get a bird and treat it with cocci medication it can result in secondary infection like canker!! its a proven scientfically known fact, Dr schrag in Belgium i think has a great book on it. by medicating in anyway the liver and kidneys have to remove toxins from the bloodstream also the gut flora is affected !! do fanciers not know this, its like putting sugar into a fuel tank. you should not do it. but carry on doing what you think is right i wont stop you. its your choice. spencer No not all medication effects the immune system there is a lot of medications that do not effect the immune system. Can you point me to a vet that tells you the treatment for canker cocci or worms will effect the immune system?
hotrod Posted January 18, 2009 Report Posted January 18, 2009 iv,e always thought that antibiotic abuse was the cause of a breakdown of the immune system, but abusing standard medication(canker, cocci, worms) only made these diseases immune to the treatments. maybe im wrong?

An antibiotic works by suppressing the immune system, a drug does not affect the immune system at all. But you are right the canker cocci and worms themselves can become immune to the drug you use.

You recomend do not to treat blind then say, treat with an unlicenced antibiotic. Think you will find Dr Colin Walker recomends to only treat cocci canker worms and lice/mites. But hey you carry on doing what you think is right. I won't stop you. It's your choice.
Guest shadow Posted January 19, 2009 Report Posted January 19, 2009 good pigeons do not get sick!! :) :)

But you are right the canker cocci and worms themselves can become immune to the drug you use. Must admit to thinking I was well-up on my knowledge & understanding of antibiotic use / misuse. Found out the following very recently:- An antibiotic works to reduce the size of the challenge on the immune system. So in a serious infection, it kills off bacteria or stops them reproducing reducing them to a level that the immune system can deal with - and finish off. So its the immune system that finishes off the disease, not the antibiotic. I cannot get any information on what constant antibiotic dosing does to the immune system. Yes we know it kills off friendly bacteria. Yes we know it creates bacteria resistance (everything that survives the antibiotic treatment becomes resistant to that particular drug, and all drugs in the same class. But what I cannot find out for definite is if it lowers the birds ability to meet and beat general illnesses. All preventative treatment for canker cocci and worms does is make them resistant to that particular drug, and all drugs in the same class. Most of these drugs are also antibiotics.
peterpau Posted January 19, 2009 Report Posted January 19, 2009 Indiscriminate use of antibiotics will I think raise the suseptablity to fungal infections. cocci canker worm treatments need to be changed regularly.
