Blue Chequer Pied Posted January 27, 2009 Report Posted January 27, 2009 I am looking to get a whistle for the young birds this year. I have one of the referee type but I would like one of the high pitched type preferably silent if possible. Does anyone have any ideas or feedback on these. I would also like to know where to obtain one. Thanks, Paul.

fletch Posted January 27, 2009 Report Posted January 27, 2009 A friend of mine uses a refree whistle with great sucess with his young birds especially in the early races when a batch comes over his house he blows on it and more often than not one or two come out it is good for the first races especially when the young birds are followin like lost sheep if they are used to the whistle they do react to it, I find it a nightmare when i go round it gives me a headache but i suppose it depends on your neighbours if they will put up with a whistle blowing

Not that they are a problem at the moment but I do not want to upset them hence my dilema and desire for a silent one. It is really only to get them in after excercise as we will not get them coming in batches up here. Thanks, Paul.
fletch Posted January 27, 2009 Report Posted January 27, 2009 maybe if i was you i would do what oldyellow says and make the whistleing noice for yourself our get a shallow whistle that is low so only the birds can here it.

Guest Owen Posted January 27, 2009 Report Posted January 27, 2009 Try a firm that sells dog whistles. I have used a clicker with good effect. There are a couple of books on Amazon which will explain how to use a clicker properly. There is a bit of technique to it. Taffy Bowen, a legend here in Wales, used to use an electric buzzer. I think it was a modified door buzzer with a toggle switch. The birds were trained so that the buzzer was on for the five minutes that the food was down. Anybody that did not respond would have to wait until tomorrow for their food. He told me that he did the basic training out of season so that he did not have the birds hungry during the flying season. It must have worked, because he won a hell of a lot of races. Taffy said that it is a bad idea to use your voice or a human whistle because the birds could detect your excitement on a race day. I have noticed that my bad traps have always involved my early birds. And yes, that was when I was wound up. The later birds usually trapped OK. I fly widowhood and I hardly ever have trouble trapping. The people next door like their barbecues especially on a Saturday. My birds are not at all worried by it and often fly in through the smoke to trap. I use a combination of the clicker and two peanuts in the box waiting for them.
