stewarty dove Posted August 25, 2008 Report Posted August 25, 2008 Hi i have a dove cote in my back garden, which has two young white racers and a red and blue, pigeons in it, My question is would i be able to race them from the dove cote? I am limited to very tight space in my garden and this is all i have. I would love to get a loft but for now it is not possible to get one. All advice would be good cheers
pjc Posted August 25, 2008 Report Posted August 25, 2008 yes you can but the biggest problem you will have is catching them to take to the club and when they return. Are they rung? Phil
bewted Posted August 25, 2008 Report Posted August 25, 2008 how big is your garden then approximately ?

pjc Posted August 25, 2008 Report Posted August 25, 2008 with only a few birds you are also likely to have an empty dovecot very quickly.

stewarty dove Posted August 25, 2008 Author Report Posted August 25, 2008 I have built a cage type desgin box, next to the cote at feeding time i put the food in and the birds fly in through the bobs. i think this is my only and best way to trap them. Why would i have an empty cote fast ??
Peckedhen Posted August 25, 2008 Report Posted August 25, 2008 I thought that I would be able to run a dove release business from a dovecote....... my problem was catching the birds as they were not contained in the dovecote. :-/ I do know someone who has little doors on his, with which he closes the birds in at night, that might be one option but, you will also need to devise a way of catching the birds when they return from a race. I don't see why you couldn't adapt a homing cage so the the birds can trap back into the dovecote but not get out.
Peckedhen Posted August 25, 2008 Report Posted August 25, 2008 OK we have posted at the same time....so you would just use food as a motivation for the birds?
pjc Posted August 25, 2008 Report Posted August 25, 2008 With current high losses when training and racing you may not last long with a few birds, but give it a go!
stewarty dove Posted August 25, 2008 Author Report Posted August 25, 2008 I see, the only other thing i can think of is rabbit hutches to keep them in. An old fellow down the street told me but i was not to sure o this
stewarty dove Posted August 25, 2008 Author Report Posted August 25, 2008 will have to look at the garden and take some sizes
terry mccarthy Posted August 25, 2008 Report Posted August 25, 2008 my hutches 9tf long 2ft deep each one 3ft wide
DOVEScot Posted August 25, 2008 Report Posted August 25, 2008 my hutches 9tf long 2ft deep each one 3ft wide Brilliant, this is what I was looking at doing for Billy so he can stll enjoy his birds :)
Roland Posted August 25, 2008 Report Posted August 25, 2008 Yep, and the Fancier from Derby that was a great National winner, who's flipping name always seems o escape me, had 8 nest boxes in a circle on top of Cat Proof poles. Flew natural f course and won big time.
